ISLAMABAD: A street in Hamtramck, a Muslim-majority city in the US state of Michigan, has been renamed in honor of the late former Bangladeshi prime minister Khaleda Zia, according to Bangladeshi local media outlets.

According to The Business Standard, the Hamtramck City Council approved the decision to rename a section of Carpenter Street as “Khaleda Zia Street,” the Bangladesh Nationalist Party Media Cell said. The renamed section runs between Joseph Campau Avenue and Conant Street, located in the heart of the city.

In a post on its official Facebook page, the BNP Media Cell said the renaming reflects international recognition of Khaleda Zia’s political leadership, democratic struggle, and contribution to Bangladesh’s history.

The media cell said that four Bangladeshi-origin councillors currently serve on the Hamtramck City Council and have played an active role in advancing the proposal.

Members of the Bangladeshi community in the United States have welcomed the move, viewing it as more than a symbolic change. Community members see the decision as an international acknowledgment of Bangladesh’s political struggle and leadership, the media cell said.

According to the BNP Media Cell, this is not the first time a street in the United States has been named after a Bangladeshi leader. A street in Chicago was previously named after the BNP founder and late president Ziaur Rahman. The addition of Khaleda Zia Street in Michigan marks another instance of Bangladesh’s political history being commemorated on US soil.

Bangladesh-US ties

Hamtramck is widely known for its diverse population, and the naming of a street after a former Bangladeshi prime minister is expected to strengthen social and cultural ties between Bangladesh and the US, according to The Business Standard.

Khaleda Zia passed away on Dec. 30 while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital, the media outlet reported. She was laid to rest with state honors the following day beside the grave of the late president Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
