ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has directed all federal, provincial, and local authorities to strengthen their coordinated efforts for preparedness, rescue, and relief as Pakistan enters a critical phase of the monsoon season. The rising heavy rains increase the likelihood of floods and other weather-related disasters across the country.
A statement posted on X on Thursday read: “Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and damage to homes, infrastructure and property caused by recent rains, the President extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with those affected.”
President Zardari instructed the National Disaster Management Authority, Provincial Disaster Management Authorities, and all relevant provincial and local administrations to maintain close coordination and ensure the timely dissemination of early warnings.
The statement further said that he directed authorities to continuously monitor rainfall, river flows and water levels in upper catchment areas, particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, while calling on downstream regions to make preparations for possible flooding.
The President also ordered the pre-positioning of rescue and relief resources, stressing the need to safeguard vulnerable communities and protect critical infrastructure.
“He further directed authorities to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of tourists and visitors in areas vulnerable to flash floods, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and landslides,” the statement added.
Emphasizing the importance of vigilance, President Zardari said all concerned institutions must remain fully alert and ensure an immediate response wherever lives or property are at risk.
He also urged the public to follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel to areas under warnings of heavy rainfall, flash floods, landslides or other weather-related hazards.
The president appreciated the dedication of rescue workers and emergency personnel engaged in relief operations and prayed for the safety and well-being of people across the country.
