ISLAMABAD: Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev arrived in Islamabad on Thursday for a two-day state visit as Pakistan and Uzbekistan signed a wide-ranging set of agreements&nbsp;aimed&nbsp;at boosting bilateral trade to $2 billion over the next five years and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, according to an official statement.&nbsp;Mirziyoyev, accompanied by a high-level delegation of cabinet ministers and business leaders, was welcomed at Nur Khan Airbase with a red-carpet reception. A 21-gun salute was fired, while a contingent of the Pakistan Armed Forces presented a guard of honor. It also follows a high-level visit by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, underscoring Pakistan&rsquo;s broader push to deepen economic links with Central Asian partners.&nbsp;During talks at the Prime Minister&rsquo;s House, Sharif and Mirziyoyev signed a bilateral trade and economic cooperation agreement, committing both sides to raise trade volumes to $2 billion within five years. The two leaders also witnessed the exchange of 28 agreements and memoranda of understanding spanning trade and investment, defense, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, information technology, mining, energy, education, culture, disaster management and maritime cooperation.&nbsp;Key accords included a defense cooperation action plan, agreements on preferential trade, maritime connectivity through Karachi, Gwadar and Port Qasim, cooperation in pharmaceuticals, agriculture and food security, digital technologies, climate change and disaster risk reduction, as well as the establishment of a Pakistan-Uzbekistan Interregional Forum and a Joint Business Council to strengthen business-to-business ties.&nbsp;In remarks to the media, Sharif praised Mirziyoyev&rsquo;s role in advancing regional peace and development, saying:&nbsp;&ldquo;I would like to convey my heartfelt congratulations on [your] being awarded the highest civil award of Pakistan, Nishan-e-Pakistan, for your great services and contribution to strengthen our brotherly relations and your commitment to convert these friendly relations into economic cooperation, trade and investment.&rdquo;&nbsp;Sharif also highlighted the shared historical and cultural bonds between the two countries, noting:&nbsp;&ldquo;The Mughal legacy from the valley of Fergana and the intellectual luminaries of Samarkand and Bukhara have marked Pakistan&rsquo;s history. He reiterated that Kashmiris have an inalienable right to determine their future through a free and impartial plebiscite.&nbsp;The president expressed deep concern over the prevailing situation in IIOJK, particularly following India&rsquo;s unilateral actions of Aug. 5, 2019, which he said had further aggravated the plight of the Kashmiri people.&nbsp;He said India had intensified efforts to consolidate its control through administrative and legislative measures, curbed media freedoms, incarcerated political leadership, and attempted to alter the demographic composition of the territory.&nbsp;Citing international reports, President Zardari highlighted arbitrary detentions, collective punishment, punitive house demolition,s and restrictions on digital freedoms, including the blocking of thousands of social media accounts. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan&rsquo;s President Asif Ali Zardari signed the National Commission for Minorities Rights Bill, 2025, into law to protect, empower, and advance the rights of the country&rsquo;s religious minority communities. President Zardari on Wednesday accorded his assent to various important legislative bills on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, following their passage by both houses of Parliament, state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported on Wednesday. Protecting minorities&nbsp;The president assented to the National Commission for Minorities Rights Bill, 2025, which aims to protect, empower, and develop religious minority communities across the country through various measures. The joint sitting of Pakistan&#39;s parliament had passed the National Commission for Minorities Rights Bill, 2025, on Dec. 2, according to Radio Pakistan. The bill was moved by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, who stated that its purpose is to safeguard the rights of non-Muslims. He said the constitution of Pakistan also provides for the rights of non-Muslims. The minister mentioned that the Supreme Court in 2014 had directed the formation of a commission to protect the rights of non-Muslims. Based on the new law, a dedicated statutory body will be established to protect, promote, and empower non-Muslim religious minority communities, fulfilling the Supreme Court&#39;s directive to ensure the protection of their constitutional rights, freedom of religion, and equal citizenship through policy-making, grievance redressal, and monitoring of the implementation of minority safeguards.&nbsp; President Zardari also signed into law the Qanun-e-Shahadat (Law of Evidence) (Amendment) Bill, 2025, as well as the King Hamad University of Nursing and Associated Medical Sciences Bill, 2025, the APP reported. However, he returned the Daanish Schools Authority Bill, 2025, to the prime minister for reconsideration, given the need for provincial consultation. In his observation, President Zardari stated that prior consultation with the relevant provincial governments was inevitable for the establishment of Daanish Schools in the provinces.
