ISLAMABAD: Ambassador Olara Otunnu, Uganda's nominee for UN secretary-general, met with Pakistan's Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday, according to the Prime Minister's Office.
In an official statement, the office stated that Otunnu was accompanied by Uganda's former Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda and special envoy for the Ugandan president.
Pakistan's delegation included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch, and senior presidential adviser Tariq Fatemi.
The UN Secretary-General serves as the organization's chief administrative officer. Selection involves nominations from member states and approval by the UN Security Council.
According to the statement, PM Sharif said Pakistan was committed to the United Nations Charter and respecting international law and treaties. The prime minister stated that Pakistan will continue supporting multilateralism and the UN's role in world affairs.
PM Sharif told Otunnu that the next UN Secretary-General should address the organization's three core areas equally: peace and security, development, and human rights. He said these should be pursued in an “interconnected and balanced manner.”
Otunnu thanked Pakistan for its contributions to multilateralism and the UN's functions. He also recognized Pakistan's involvement in international peace and security efforts.
