ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has categorically rejected India’s assertions regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir, saying New Delhi’s unilateral actions and continued occupation cannot alter the region’s internationally recognized disputed status.
Responding to media queries about a statement issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs concerning the map of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region, Foreign Office spokesperson Ambassador Sajjad Haider Khan said India’s claims were baseless and contrary to internationally recognized facts.
“The Jammu and Kashmir dispute remains one of the oldest unresolved disputes on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council,” the spokesperson said.
“Relevant UN Security Council resolutions stipulate that the final disposition of Jammu and Kashmir must be determined in accordance with these resolutions and the will of the Kashmiri people through a free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices,” he said.
Pakistan said that official United Nations maps, which depict Jammu and Kashmir as a disputed territory, remain the only cartographic representation reflecting its current legal status.
“India’s so-called official maps and unilateral claims of sovereignty have no bearing on the status of the disputed territory,” the spokesperson said.
Pakistan also urged the international community to ensure that India immediately stops human rights violations in Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
It further called on India to fulfil its commitment to the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
