The ministry also said that a grenade launched by an Israeli drone in the southern town of Shaqra wounded five people. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incidents. BEIRUT: Lebanon&#39;s President Joseph Aoun told US officials on Sunday his country was tackling money laundering and the financing of terrorism, days after Washington imposed sanctions on three Hezbollah members. The trio were accused of money laundering to fund Lebanon&#39;s Hezbollah group, designated a terrorist organization by the United States and other Western powers. The US delegation&#39;s visit to Beirut, headed by senior director for counterterrorism Sebastian Gorka, came as Washington works to cut off Hezbollah&#39;s funding and Lebanon&#39;s government tries to disarm it. The group was severely weakened in its most recent war with Israel, which was halted by a November 2024 ceasefire. &quot;Lebanon strictly applies the measures adopted to prevent money laundering, smuggling, or its use in financing terrorism, and severely punishes financial crimes of all kinds,&quot; Aoun said he had told the delegation. On Thursday, the US imposed sanctions on three Hezbollah members allegedly involved in the transfer of tens of millions of dollars from Iran, the group&#39;s main sponsor. Part of the funding was via money exchange businesses that operate in cash, said a US Treasury statement. BEIRUT: Hezbollah lashed out on Thursday against the prospect of any political negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, and insisted that it has a right to defend itself. A source close to Hezbollah&rsquo;s political leadership told AFP the declaration followed recent US and Egyptian pressure on Lebanon&rsquo;s leaders to open direct negotiations. Lebanon and Israel are still technically in a state of war, but all the recent armed conflicts with Israel were fought by Hezbollah, not the Lebanese military. On Thursday, an Israeli strike killed one person, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The Israeli military said it had targeted a Hezbollah construction team. The only diplomatic contact between Israel and Lebanon is through a ceasefire monitoring mechanism, which includes the United States, France and the United Nations. This body meets regularly at the headquarters of the UN force in southern Lebanon but the Lebanese and Israeli parties do not directly communicate with each other. Disarmament driveHezbollah was the only movement in Lebanon that refused to disarm after the 1975-1990 civil war, first claiming it had a duty to liberate territory occupied by Israel, and then to continue defending the country. In an open letter to the Lebanese people and their leaders, Hezbollah said it rejected &ldquo;any political negotiations&rdquo; between Lebanon and Israel and that such talks would &ldquo;not serve the national interest.&rdquo; Hezbollah is backed by Iran, which also fought its own war against Israel earlier this year. &ldquo;We reaffirm our legitimate right... to defend ourselves against an enemy that imposes war on our country and does not cease its attacks,&rdquo; Hezbollah added. Under the terms of the ceasefire, the army is tasked with ensuring Hezbollah is disarmed in the south near the Israeli border by the end of the year, before proceeding to its disarmament in the rest of Lebanon. Hezbollah has criticized the government&rsquo;s &ldquo;hasty decision&rdquo; to disarm it, claiming that Israel has taken advantage of the push.

One person was wounded in Bnaafoul, in the Saida district, and six in Ansar, in the Nabatieh district, it added. BEIRUT: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called for negotiations with Israel on Monday, after US President Donald Trump brokered a ceasefire in Gaza. In October 2023, Iran-backed Hezbollah began launching rockets at Israel in support of Hamas in the Gaza war. Months of hostilities escalated into all-out war in September 2024, before a ceasefire was agreed two months later. Israel has continued to strike Lebanon, saying it is hitting Hezbollah targets, but according to the United Nations over 100 civilians have been killed since the truce. &quot;The Lebanese state has previously negotiated with Israel under American and United Nations auspices, resulting in an agreement to demarcate the maritime border... so what prevents the same thing from happening again to find solutions to the outstanding issues,&quot; Aoun said according to a presidency statement. &quot;Today, the general atmosphere is one of compromise, and it is necessary to negotiate,&quot; he added, specifying that &quot;the form of this negotiation will be determined in due time&quot;. The US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect on Friday. An Israeli drone strike on Sunday killed five people, including three children, in Bint Jbeil, a town in southern Lebanon, the country&rsquo;s health ministry reported.&nbsp;Two others were injured when a motorbike and a vehicle were targeted in the attack, according to Lebanon&rsquo;s state news agency.&nbsp;The strike took place despite a US-brokered truce between Lebanon and Israel, which has been in effect since November following over a year of conflict linked to the Gaza war. Israel has continued to carry out strikes on what it says are Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said the victims included a father and his three children, while the mother was wounded. He added the family held US citizenship.&nbsp;A US State Department spokesperson later stated that, while the situation remains uncertain, indications so far suggest the individuals killed were not US citizens, noting one had a previously unused immigrant visa petition.&nbsp;The Israeli military confirmed that the strike killed a Hezbollah member but acknowledged that several uninvolved civilians also lost their lives.
