US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan’s leadership while defending his decision to cancel a planned trip by senior US envoys to Islamabad for talks linked to the Iran diplomatic process.

Speaking to reporters in Florida, Trump described Pakistan in positive terms, saying: “I think Pakistan is terrific. I think the Field Marshal is fantastic. I think that Prime Minister of Pakistan is great,” in reference to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Trump said the decision to cancel the trip was logistical rather than political, citing the distance and timing of the proposed meeting.

“Too much travel,” he said, adding: “When they said the meeting [was] scheduled for Tuesday, I said ‘Tuesday, that’s a long time from now.’”

He said the US delegation, which was expected to include Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and Vice President JD Vance, remained available if conditions changed, but stressed that Washington preferred engagement at the highest level.

“They weren’t meeting with the leader of the country… and I said we’re just not going to do it,” Trump said.

US President Donald Trump said he has canceled the planned visit of his representatives to Islamabad for talks with Iranian officials, citing what he described as unnecessary travel and internal divisions within Tehran’s leadership.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had “just canceled” his representatives' trip to Pakistan, saying that too much time was being spent on travel while negotiations remained unresolved.

“If they want to talk, all they have to do is call,” Trump said, adding that Washington believed it held the stronger negotiating position.

He also claimed there was “tremendous infighting and confusion” within Iran’s leadership.

Trump says he canceled Witkoff, Kushner trip to Pakistan for Iran talks: Fox News

US President Donald Trump has canceled a planned trip to Pakistan by senior envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for talks linked to the ongoing diplomatic process with Iran, according to comments reported by Fox News.

Fox News White House Correspondent Aishah Hasnie said on X that Trump confirmed the decision directly, saying he had “unilaterally cancelled” the trip shortly before departure.

“I’ve told my people a little while ago they were getting ready to leave, and I said, ‘Nope, you’re not making an 18 hour flight to go there,’” Trump was quoted as saying.

“We have all the cards. They can call us anytime they want, but you’re not going to be making any more 18 hour flights to sit around talking about nothing.”

Talking to Axios, Trump said that canceling his envoys' trip to Islamabad for talks did not automatically mean war with Iran would restart despite the setback in peace efforts.

Asked whether the cancellation meant he would resume the war, Trump told Axios: "No. It doesn't mean that. We haven't thought about it yet."

In a statement released on Friday, the group explained that the situation in the Middle East will necessitate higher flight costs to reflect more expensive jet fuel.

According to United Kingdom media reports, airlines typically utilize “hedging” – the practice of purchasing a portion of their fuel in advance at fixed rates – to shield themselves from market volatility.

However, IAG noted that despite these fuel hedges, it is “not immune” to the broader economic fallout from the conflict.
