ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and renewed diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing that dialogue remains the only viable path to lasting peace, said a statement from the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN.
According to the statement, addressing the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, voiced deep concern over the continued escalation of the conflict, warning that attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure are causing an unacceptable humanitarian crisis.
He said the prolonged war is not only inflicting immense suffering on civilians but is also disrupting global food and energy supplies, with developing countries bearing the brunt of its economic consequences.
"Ambassador Asim strongly condemned attacks targeting civilians, civilian infrastructure and humanitarian workers, urging all parties to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law strictly," added the statement.
Reaffirming Pakistan's consistent position, the ambassador stressed that there is no military solution to the conflict and that a durable peace can only be achieved through meaningful, sustained and inclusive dialogue.
He expressed regret that 17 months after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2774, its objectives of ending the conflict and advancing a lasting peace have yet to be realized.
Calling for the resolution's implementation, Ambassador Asim urged an immediate and complete ceasefire to create space for diplomacy and the resumption of negotiations.
He reaffirmed Pakistan's support for a peaceful settlement that is consistent with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, the legitimate security interests of all parties and relevant multilateral agreements.
The ambassador also reiterated Pakistan's commitment to supporting all international efforts aimed at achieving a just, comprehensive, durable and peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.
