ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Fatima Zahra made history on Tuesday by becoming the country's first woman to win a Commonwealth Games boxing medal, defeating New Zealand's Jordan Wilson in the women's 60kg quarterfinals at Glasgow 2026.
According to a statement by the Commonwealth Games, the 22-year-old’s win ensures Zahra will leave Scotland with at least a bronze medal after defeating Wilson 5-0, with all five judges scoring in her favor to secure a spot in the semi-finals.
This milestone marks 10 years since Pakistan first entered a women's team in international boxing competition, according to the statement.
"This is our first step," Zahra said after the victory.
"We are hoping for the gold as well, and this medal will mean a lot for Pakistan boxing."
"It's been a long way. We are developing in boxing, but it's a sign that we are going in the right direction," she added.
Zahra will face Canada's Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh in Friday's semi-final after the Canadian defeated Kenya's Rosemarion Otieno in the last eight.
Pakistan arrived in Glasgow with a five-member boxing squad comprising Fatima Zahra and Malaika Zahid in the women's events, and Samama Rehman, Qudrat Ullahand Afzal Khan Pathan in the men's competition.
According to the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA), Pakistan sent a 36-member contingent, which is competing in athletics, boxing, gymnastics, judo, lawn bowls, swimming and weightlifting. Olympic javelin champion Arshad Nadeem is among the country's highest-profile athletes at the Games.
