34 killed in Balochistan mine accident, PM orders continued rescue efforts

ISLAMABAD: A blast at a coal mine killed at least 34 workers in southern Pakistan as rescuers searched for more missing miners.

The explosion tore through the mine in the Suranj area on the outskirts of Quetta, in the Balochistan province, on Thursday, sparking a rescue operation that ran through the night.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday expressed grief and sorrow over the deaths of workers in the accident.

He directed the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and other relevant agencies to continue rescue operations.

"The accident caused by a gas buildup ... is deeply tragic," the prime minister said in a statement.

"PDMA and all other relevant agencies should continue rescue operations in an effective and efficient manner," he said.

Rescue underway

The prime minister instructed the authorities to ensure prompt assistance and medical treatment for those injured.

He ordered that rescue efforts continue until all affected workers were rescued and relief operations concluded.

Effective safety measures

Prime Minister Sharif extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and offered special prayers for the elevation of the deceased's ranks in the hereafter.

Calling for stronger workplace protections, the prime minister said, "The lives of workers employed in coal mines must be protected through permanent and effective safety measures."

"Hardworking laborers are a valuable asset to our country," he added.

UK, Iranian diplomats express condolences 

UK High Commissioner in Islamabad, Jane Marriott, in a post on X on Friday expressed condolences over the loss of lives. 

She wrote, "Heartbreaking news from Balochistan, where dozens of miners have lost their lives following a coal mine collapse."

"My sincere condolences to their families, friends, and communities as they mourn this terrible loss," Marriott added. 

Meanwhile, Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, also expressed his condolences in a social media post.

He wrote, "I receive heart-wrenching news of tragic mine incident in Quetta claiming lives of 32 miners who worked tirelessly to provide for their families."

"I extend my heartfelt condolences & sympathies to people & @GovtofPakistan esp. to the bereaved families who have lost beloved ones," Moghadam added.
