Pakistan to accelerate renewable energy push to address national power shortfall

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday formally launched the &ldquo;Apna Ghar Scheme,&rdquo; a government-backed housing initiative aimed at enabling low- and middle-income families to build or own homes through subsidized financing, according to official statements from the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office. Addressing the launch ceremony in Islamabad, the prime minister said expanding access to housing for ordinary citizens remains a key government priority, describing shelter as a &ldquo;fundamental and sacred duty&rdquo; of the state. PM Sharif strongly condemns suicide attack in northwest Pakistan  

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan&rsquo;s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government allocated Rs125 billion through budget cuts and savings to absorb rising petroleum prices and shield the public from global economic pressures. An online review meeting was held on Sunday under the prime minister&#39;s chairmanship to discuss the implementation of ongoing measures for fuel conservation and austerity in view of the regional situation, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office Media Wing. Prime Minister Sharif, while declaring public relief the top priority, said that over the past three weeks, the government has absorbed as much of the increase in petroleum product prices as possible to provide relief to the public. Sufficient quantity of petroleum products availableThe prime minister said that due to government decisions, sufficient quantities of petroleum products are available to meet domestic needs.&nbsp;Participants were informed that arrangements for petrol imports for April have been completed. The PM emphasized that, in the current situation, public relief has been the top priority and that, over the past three weeks, the government has provided the maximum possible relief. Unlike in other countries, Pakistan has neither long queues nor fuel supply mismanagement, reflecting the government&rsquo;s effective management. The PM urged the public to support the government&rsquo;s conservation campaign, avoid unnecessary travel, and prioritize teleconferencing at offices and workplaces. Austerity and conservation measuresThe meeting was briefed on the progress of implementing austerity and conservation measures. It was informed that the demand and supply of petroleum products, along with the entire supply chain, are being regularly monitored, and a digital dashboard has been developed for this purpose. He directed provincial governments to provide all necessary facilities for motorcycle and rickshaw owners to register their vehicles in their names to digitalize vehicle data, and&nbsp;enable owners to benefit from future government relief measures. The meeting was briefed on a prepared app for the proposed fuel support program for motorcycle riders and rickshaw drivers. The prime minister instructed the relevant authorities to expedite coordination with the chief secretaries of all four provinces, as well as Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, on this matter. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday announced austerity measures amid rising global oil prices, citing disruptions to trade in the Strait of Hormuz. Addressing the nation, the prime minister said the federal and provincial governments had unanimously decided on austerity measures, including a 50% immediate cut in fuel for government vehicles for two months. Ambulances and public buses will be exempt, he said. The prime minister said that in the public and private sectors, 50% of staff will work from home, excluding essential services. He added that offices will remain open only four days a week to save fuel, noting that this does not apply to banks, industry, or agriculture. According to him, two-week school holidays will begin at the end of this week, while higher education will move to online classes. He said that 60% of government vehicles will be grounded for the next two months, while cabinet members and ministers will not take salaries for two months. Sharif also announced a complete ban on foreign travel for ministers and officials, including the prime minister, chief ministers, and governors, unless the visits are essential for national interest. He added that teleconferencing will be prioritized to reduce fuel use. Speaking about hoarders and profiteers, the prime minister warned that the law would &ldquo;act against them&rdquo; without discrimination. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan&#39;s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday directed provincial governments to take strict legal action against those involved in hoarding petroleum products and creating artificial shortages in the country.&nbsp;Chairing a high-level meeting on petroleum supplies in Islamabad, the prime minister was briefed by the Ministry of Petroleum on the country&rsquo;s fuel reserves in the context of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/pakistan-urges-restraint-as-pm-sharif-intensifies-diplomacy-over-middle-east-war" target="_blank" style="color:#0073e6;" rel="noopener noreferrer">evolving regional situation</a>.&nbsp;Officials informed the meeting that Pakistan currently has adequate stocks of petroleum products to meet domestic requirements.&nbsp;The prime minister, however, warned against profiteering and instructed provincial authorities to act firmly against hoarders. He said any petrol pump found involved in creating artificial shortages should be immediately sealed, its licence cancelled, and legal action initiated.&nbsp;Sharif also directed the federal petroleum minister to visit provinces and coordinate with provincial governments to develop a comprehensive plan to ensure the conservation of petroleum products and their uninterrupted supply to the public. The prime minister further ordered the establishment of a digital dashboard to monitor the movement of petroleum products, enabling real-time data sharing with provinces to ensure effective oversight of fuel transportation and distribution. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, federal ministers Jam Kamal Khan, Ahsan Iqbal Cheema, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Attaullah Tarar, Ali Pervaiz Malik, Owais Leghari, Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan, and State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmad.&nbsp;Chief secretaries from all four provinces, as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, also attended the meeting along with senior government officials.
