ISLAMABAD: "Lahore is truly impressive," says US Congressman Michael Baumgartner, praising the city's rich history, architecture and development while expressing optimism about stronger Pakistan-US cooperation in education, tourism, transportation and cultural exchanges.
Speaking to Pakistan TV during his visit to Lahore alongside fellow US Congressman Ryan Zinke, Baumgartner said: "Lahore is truly impressive. The history, the architecture, the development, it's a wonderful city. We're very encouraged by the conversations we've had on education, tourism, transportation and cultural exchanges. Every American should come and see this beautiful city."
The US congressional delegation visited Lahore's historic and cultural landmarks on Sunday, paying tribute at the mausoleum of Pakistan's national poet, Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal, before touring the Badshahi Mosque and Lahore Fort.
The delegation began its visit at Iqbal's Mausoleum, where the two lawmakers laid a floral wreath and recorded their remarks in the visitors' book, honouring Allama Iqbal's enduring intellectual and philosophical legacy.
Ryan Zinke also expressed optimism about bilateral ties while speaking to Pakistan TV, saying he saw "enormous opportunity" as President Donald Trump, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif work together, while stressing that diplomacy with Iran should continue alongside key security commitments.
The delegation visited the Badshahi Mosque, where officials briefed them on the mosque's rich history, religious significance and Mughal-era architecture before touring Lahore Fort, including the renowned Picture Wall, Sheesh Mahal and other historic sections.
Director General of the Walled City of Lahore Authority, Najmus Saqib, accompanied the delegation throughout the visit and provided detailed briefings on the preservation, history and cultural significance of Lahore's heritage sites.
Earlier, the US delegation also visited the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, where they were briefed on the smart policing, surveillance and public safety systems.
The US lawmakers also met provincial ministers and held discussions on strengthening cooperation in education, tourism, transportation and cultural exchanges.
