ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is preparing to welcome Quran reciters from across the Muslim world for the country’s first-ever International Qirat Competition, the religious affairs ministry announced Saturday.

The event will run from Nov. 24 to 29 in the capital, bringing together more than 34 participants from member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

In a Qirat competition, reciters or "qaris" recite the Quran from memory in Arabic, focusing on proper pronunciation, articulation, and rhythm.

The ministry said that qaris from various countries had begun arriving in Pakistan to participate in the competition.

So far, qaris from Chad, Somalia, and Ghana had arrived and were welcomed by ministry representatives.

Additional participants expected today include Qari Yegil Man Muhammad from Kazakhstan, Qari Diallo Amadou from Mali, Qari Ahmed Maske from Mauritania, and Qari Abda’u Fazaluddin from Comoros, the ministry noted.

The panel of international judges will feature Qari Al-Sheikh Dr Hamdullah Hafeez Muhammad Ibrahim from Egypt, Qari Hamza Muiz Ahmed Ali from Bahrain, Qari Ahmed Bakri Hassan Nawasrah from Jordan, and Qari Nabeel Muhammad Ali Shreibati from Palestine.

According to the official schedule, Group-1 and Group-2 competitions will take place from Nov. 24 to 27 at the Auditorium of the National University of Modern Languages.

The grand prize distribution ceremony will be held on Nov. 29 at the Jinnah Convention Center, where winners will be formally honored.

The ministry added that state-level dignitaries are expected to preside over both the inaugural and concluding sessions, highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to promoting Quranic recitation and fostering intercultural and interfaith harmony among Muslim nations.
