ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has underscored the importance of dialogue among civilizations as a vital tool for fostering global peace, mutual understanding, and international cooperation, during a high-level United Nations event marking the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, said a statement posted on X’s account of the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN on Thursday.
Speaking at the event themed “Exploring New Pathways for Dialogue Among Civilizations and Jointly Writing New Chapters for Global Governance,” on Wednesday, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, highlighted the enduring value of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing contemporary global challenges.
The ambassador noted that throughout history, civilizations have advanced through engagement, mutual respect and cooperation, enabling societies to achieve shared progress and development.
Ambassador Iftikhar said the United Nations, established in the aftermath of World War II, recognizes the close connection between international peace and meaningful dialogue among civilizations.
Referring to the current global environment, he said the world is facing numerous challenges that threaten peace and harmony, making inter-civilizational dialogue more important than ever.
Highlighting Pakistan’s historical and cultural heritage, the ambassador said the country’s unique geographical position at the crossroads of the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, and the West has made it a meeting point of diverse civilizations and religions.
He stressed that interfaith harmony, peaceful coexistence, pluralism, and cultural diversity are fundamental characteristics of Pakistani society and continue to shape the country’s foreign policy approach.
Pakistani envoy also noted that Pakistan, together with the Philippines, co-sponsored the UN General Assembly resolution on the promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue, understanding and cooperation for peace, which was adopted by consensus on May 20.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism, he said the country would continue working closely with the United Nations and member states to advance dialogue among civilizations, cultures, and faiths in pursuit of global peace, stability, and prosperity.
