COLOMBO: India defeated Pakistan by 61 runs on Sunday to qualify for the next round of the T20 World Cup in a showdown that had been in doubt until a few days ago.&nbsp;Suryakumar Yadav&#39;s side scored 175-7 after being given a flying start by Ishan Kishan&#39;s brilliant 77 and then bowled out Pakistan for 114 in 18 overs.&nbsp;India have won eight of nine T20 World Cup meetings and all eight of their ODI World Cup encounters.&nbsp;&quot;I think this is for India,&quot; said Suryakumar after his side followed the West Indies into the Super Eights stage.&nbsp;&quot;Batting first was (the) better option on this wicket.&quot; Pakistan&#39;s batting&nbsp;Pakistan got off to the worst possible start in their chase of 176 to win, Sahibzada Farhan top-edging a slog across the line to mid-on for a duck in Hardik Pandya&#39;s first over.&nbsp;It became 6-2 when Jasprit Bumrah&#39;s second ball trapped Saim Ayub (6) plumb in front.&nbsp;Captain Salman Agha (4) was next to go, with another mistimed slog off Bumrah&#39;s sixth ball leaving his team in dire straits at 13-3.&nbsp;When spinner Axar Patel bowled Babar Azam for five, Pakistan were in tatters at 34-4.&nbsp;Usman Khan offered some resistance, scoring 44 from 34 balls with a six and six fours.&nbsp;But after he charged down the pitch to Axar and Kishan stumped him by a mile, it sparked a mini-collapse to 78-7 and the game was done and dusted.&nbsp;Earlier, India captain Suryakumar and his Pakistan opposite number Agha did not shake hands at the coin toss, which Agha won and elected to bowl.&nbsp;The two captains did the same at their three matches at the Asia Cup in Dubai last year, including the final.&nbsp;India opening batsman Abhishek Sharma returned after a stomach bug but lasted only four balls before falling without scoring. Dominant KishanKishan was unperturbed by the loss of his partner and set about an assault on the Pakistan bowlers, bringing up his 50 off 27 balls.&nbsp;He was middling the ball all round the park, so it was a major surprise when he missed a straight delivery from spinner Ayub and was bowled.&nbsp;&quot;Ishan thought outside the box,&quot; said Suryakumar. &quot;After we were 0-1, someone had to take responsibility and the way he took it was amazing.&quot;&nbsp;Kishan dominated the strike so much that when he departed it was with 77 runs out of India&#39;s 88-2 after 8.4 overs to his name. He smacked three sixes and 10 fours. Kishan&#39;s departure enabled Pakistan to put the brakes on India&#39;s batsmen and, at after 14 overs, they had advanced the score only to 125-2.&nbsp;Tilak Varma, on 25, became Ayub&#39;s second victim, trapped in front and India were 126-3 and he then got Hardik caught in the deep next ball.&nbsp;Shivam Dube was beaten all ends up by the hat-trick ball, but it bounced over the top of middle stump and he somehow survived.&nbsp;Suryakumar made 32 off 29 balls. Dube was run out in the final over for 27.&nbsp;The cricket teams of the nuclear-armed neighbors only meet in multi-nation tournaments at neutral venues as part of a compromise deal.&nbsp;It has been more than 18 years since India and Pakistan last met in a Test match, and 13 years since either side crossed the border to play a bilateral series.

LAHORE: All-rounder Saim Ayub starred in Pakistan&#39;s spin-assisted 22-run win over&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/australia-announce-squad-for-threegame-t20i-series-in-pakistan" target="_blank" style="color:#0073e6;" rel="noopener noreferrer">Australia</a>&nbsp;in the first Twenty20 international in Lahore on Thursday.&nbsp;Ayub top-scored in Pakistan&#39;s 168-8 with a 22-ball 40 that included two sixes and three fours, while Salman Agha added four sixes and a four in his 27-ball 39.&nbsp;The tourists managed 146-8 in their 20 overs with spinners taking six wickets for Pakistan.&nbsp;With the ball, Ayub dismissed Australian openers Matthew Short (five) and Travis Head, who hit two sixes and two fours in his 13-ball 23.&nbsp;Cameroon Green resisted with a 31-ball 36 but Australia succumbed to spin with Abrar Ahmed taking 2-10 while Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan took a wicket apiece.&nbsp;Both teams were tuning up for the australia&nbsp;starting in India and Sri Lanka from February 7.&nbsp;Pakistan skipper Agha praised a team effort.&nbsp;&quot;It was a great game with complete team effort,&quot; said Agha. &quot;We started well with the bat but couldn&#39;t finish the way we wanted.&nbsp;&quot;It became challenging after the first 10 overs as the ball stopped coming onto the bat, but I think we were outstanding with the ball.&quot;&nbsp;Head, standing in for regular skipper Mitchell Marsh who rested, showed disappointment over batting.&nbsp;&quot;It was disappointing, but that&#39;s how batting goes sometimes,&quot; said Head.&nbsp;&quot;We felt like we dragged it back well after the first 10 overs but as the ball got softer, it became harder to score.&quot;&nbsp;Earlier, Ayub led Pakistan&#39;s batting after the home team won the toss and chose to bat.&nbsp;Paceman Xavier Bartlett jolted Pakistan by dismissing Sahibzada Farhan with the first ball of the match.&nbsp;But Ayub and Agha restored the innings with a second wicket stand of 74, but spinner Adam Zampa put the brakes on Pakistan&#39;s progress with 4-24.&nbsp;Zampa dismissed both Ayub and Agha in successive overs before accounting for Babar Azam (24) and Usman Khan (18).&nbsp;Debutant Mahli Beardman finished with 2-33 as Pakistan managed just 31 in the last five overs.&nbsp;The last two matches are on Saturday and Sunday, also in Lahore.

Saim Ayub’s all-round show powered Pakistan to a 22-run win over Australia in the first T20I in Lahore. He scored 40 and took two wickets as spinners dominated ahead of the World Cup warm-up series.
