ISLAMABAD: Pakistan&rsquo;s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari said on Wednesday, the International Human Rights Day, that the country was committed to protecting and promoting human rights.&nbsp; The International Human Rights Day commemorates the historic Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office, PM Sharif reiterated the country&#39;s commitment to protecting fundamental &ldquo;human rights, especially human dignity, equality and freedom.&rdquo; While speaking about this year&#39;s theme, &ldquo;Our Daily Needs&rdquo;, PM Sharif said human rights were not just theoretical or bookish concepts but were practical &ldquo;actions, including [the provision of] basic elements such as food, clean water, and protection of life.&rdquo; &#39;Equality for all humanity&#39; The premier said that Islam was &ldquo;the strongest, most credible and effective source of human rights,&rdquo; adding that it proclaimed equality for all humanity. He said that the religion mandated a society where there was &ldquo;no discrimination on the basis of color, race, caste, religion or belief.&rdquo; PM Sharif said the government was committed to protecting, promoting, and effectively implementing people&#39;s rights, adding that the country had always &ldquo;supported human rights at the national and international levels.&rdquo; &ldquo;Our goal is to create a society where no citizen is left behind,&rdquo; PM Sharif was quoted as saying.&nbsp; According to the Associated Press of Pakistan, President Zardari reaffirmed that the government would continue its efforts to safeguard the &ldquo;liberty, dignity and self-esteem of all citizens.&rdquo; &ldquo;The Constitution of Pakistan guarantees freedom to every citizen, without distinction of caste, creed or color,&rdquo; the president said in a message. &#39;Justice for every individual&#39; President Zardari reaffirmed his commitment to upholding dignity, equality, and justice for every individual, regardless of race, religion, gender, language, or social status. Atrocities in Indian-occupied Kashmir&nbsp;&ldquo;Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu &amp; Kashmir (IIOJ&amp;K) and the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), where people under occupation continue to suffer atrocities and serious human rights violations while striving for their inalienable right to self-determination,&rdquo; he said. The deputy prime minister said, &ldquo;We also remain concerned at the rising tide of Islamophobia and underscore the need for concerted international efforts to address this challenge that is intensifying marginalization, stigmatization and hatred in many societies.&rdquo; &ldquo;Pakistan vows to continue upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms for all without discrimination, and looks forward to enhanced international cooperation to tackle all current and emerging challenges in this regard,&rdquo; Dar said in his message.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have started their joint military exercise Warrior-IX, the ninth edition of the annual counterterrorism drills conducted between the two militaries, the military&#39;s media wing&nbsp;said on Tuesday. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the exercise, which began on Monday at the National Counter Terrorism Center, Pabbi, focuses on counterterrorism operations and aims to enhance interoperability, improve professional skills, and facilitate the exchange of best practices in modern warfare. ISPR said the Pakistan Army and the People&rsquo;s Liberation Army of China continue to maintain time-tested defence cooperation built on mutual trust and strategic partnership. The Warrior series, it added, reflects the strong military-to-military ties and the shared commitment of both countries to regional peace, stability, and security. The Mangla Corps Commander, along with Major General Bian Xiaoming, Deputy Chief of Staff of the PLA Western Theatre Command, and senior military officials from both sides, attended the opening ceremony.

Cyclone Ditwah, bringing powerful winds and torrential rains, triggered Sri Lanka&rsquo;s worst flooding in a decade when it struck on Friday, unleashing deadly landslides across the country&rsquo;s hilly central regions. &ldquo;Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed to provide all possible help [to Sri Lanka] in this time of need,&rdquo; Tarar said in a post on X. Pakistan Navy ship PNS Saif, which was on a port call at Colombo for participation in an international fleet review, is actively undertaking relief operations for the local populace. The Pakistan Navy has continued relief operations in Sri Lanka for the third consecutive day. On Monday, a Navy helicopter aboard PNS Saif successfully rescued a family that had been stranded for five days, including a seven-month-old child. With the assistance of local authorities, the Navy safely evacuated residents trapped in floodwaters from rooftops to secure locations. Earlier, the Pakistan Navy also delivered food staples, MREs, medical supplies, and other essential items to support thousands struggling in the aftermath of the disaster. ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has said a truly futuristic approach is essential to move forward. Speaking at PTV Home&rsquo;s programme &lsquo;Rising Pakistan&rsquo; on the occasion of the channel&rsquo;s 61st anniversary, Attaullah Tarar said new platforms are being created to connect Gen Z with PTV. The minister said during Pakistan-India war, it was realized that there was a need to start channels as a stratcom tool. &ldquo;We are encouraging private sector channels as well,&rdquo; he said. Attaullah Tarar said Pakistan TV Satellite has a fresh and new look and &ldquo;our stories are being quoted by international media outlets like BBC and Reuters&rdquo;. He said our strategic and geopolitical situation is such that exclusive stories from here have international significance.&ldquo;We brought new vigour in English media, whether it be digital or satellite,&rdquo; he said. Attaullah Tarar said very capable women were heading most departments in PTV, adding that it is a women-led initiative in the information domain.He said in sports, we got exclusive rights of many series through which we generated revenue. The minister said a sustainable model is needed.&nbsp; He went on to say that we are trying to do collaboration with the private sector for PTV Home. &ldquo;We can make good dramas and do collaborations with the private sector under profit-cost sharing basis,&rdquo; he said, adding that public-private partnership is a way forward. He said those who are leaders in entertainment in private sector should be invited to collaborate with PTV. The minister said today all those who are leading the entertainment industry say they started from PTV. He added that PTV has given birth to the entertainment, sports and news industries. Attaullah Tarar said he does not believe in criticism for the sake of criticism, adding that there should be constructive criticism to bring reforms. He said the private sector will be strongly encouraged in media projects, adding that Pakistan Idol was launched as private sector collaboration at a minimum cost. The information minister said the government aims to expand youth involvement through private sector programmes.

MUMBAI: Bitter rivals India and Pakistan have been clubbed together in the same group and will play each other on February 15 in Colombo in the T20 World Cup 2026, cricket&#39;s world body announced Tuesday.&nbsp;Defending champions India and Pakistan have been placed in Group A in the 20-team competition being co-hosted by Sri Lanka, according to the schedule released by the International Cricket Council in Mumbai.&nbsp;It will be the first time the two teams play each other since their three heated contests at the 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE, where they skipped the customary handshake at the toss and post-match greetings.&nbsp;The Asia Cup was the first time they had met since deadly border conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors in May.&nbsp;The T20 World Cup will see Pakistan playing all their matches in Sri Lanka, part of a compromise deal that allows both India and Pakistan to play at neutral venues in multi-nation tournaments.&nbsp;Matches in the tournament will be held from February 7 across five venues in India and three in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;The tournament will use the same format as 2024, 20 teams in four groups, ahead of a Super Eights phase, with the top two finishers from each group making it to the playoffs.&nbsp;The final will be played on March 8 either in Ahmedabad or Colombo, depending on whether Pakistan go all the way.

India and Pakistan will meet on February 15 in Colombo after being grouped together for the 2026 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Their fixtures will be held at neutral venues under an agreed arrangement.
