ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has received $1.3 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) programs, the State Bank of Pakistan confirmed on Wednesday. In a statement, the State Bank said that the transfer was approved by the IMF Executive Board during the third review of Pakistan&rsquo;s economic program on May 8. According to the central bank, the IMF Executive Board approved 760 million Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) for Pakistan, while a second tranche of 154 million SDRs was also approved under the RSF programme. The State Bank said it has received a total of 914 million SDRs. The central bank clarified that the amount would not be converted into Pakistani rupees and would instead be added to the country&rsquo;s foreign exchange reserves. Officials said the inflow would be reflected in the foreign exchange reserves for the week ending May 15, 2026. The latest disbursement is expected to provide support to Pakistan&rsquo;s external financing position and help strengthen foreign exchange reserves. Under the current IMF programme, Pakistan has so far received a total of $4.6 billion. Pakistan had entered into the 37-month EFF programme with the IMF in September 2024 as part of efforts to stabilise the economy and support reforms.

The launch is significant for Pakistan&rsquo;s automobile industry, where local assemblers are under pressure to diversify product lines amid changing consumer preferences, rising fuel costs and growing interest in hybrid and fuel-efficient mobility. The Fronx, powered by a 1.5-liter K-Series engine, comes in multiple transmission options, including manual and automatic variants, while offering features such as Apple CarPlay, cruise control, parking sensors, rear camera systems, and six airbags, features that signal rising competition in Pakistan&rsquo;s upper-tier passenger car market. At the launch event in Islamabad, early buyers pointed to both design and fuel efficiency as key buying factors. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s a very good effort by Suzuki,&rdquo; Sheikh Mohammad Irfan, a businessman attending the launch, told Pakistan TV Digital.&nbsp; &ldquo;This car is better; it looks better than all of them,&rdquo; he said, comparing the Fronx to Suzuki&rsquo;s earlier models including the Alto, Cultus, Wagon R and Swift. But Irfan also highlighted a broader trend shaping Pakistan&rsquo;s car market: fuel economics. &ldquo;Nowadays, due to petrol prices, people are moving towards electric cars,&rdquo; he said. Maritime rescue operation&nbsp;The briefing concluded with details of a maritime rescue operation carried out by the Pakistan Navy in the Arabian Sea after the offshore vessel MV Gautam, carrying six Indian and one Indonesian crew member, suffered a technical failure. ISLAMABAD: Australia&#39;s men&#39;s national cricket team will tour Pakistan later this month for a three-match One-day International (ODI) series, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Thursday. According to the schedule released by PCB, Australia will arrive in Islamabad on May 23, with the first ODI scheduled for Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on May 30.&nbsp; The remaining two matches of the series will take place at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on June 2 and June 4. Australia, which played a T20 series in Pakistan earlier this year, will defend its 50-over title at the World Cup co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October 2027. It will be the team&#39;s first bilateral ODI series in Pakistan since March-April 2022, PCB said. Beijing has quietly engaged in efforts to resolve the weekslong crisis, and its diplomacy is credited with playing an important role in the fragile ceasefire agreed between Washington and Tehran. China &quot;will work harder to ease tensions and end the fighting, continue to support the launch of peace talks, and play a greater role in restoring peace and tranquility to the Middle East&quot;, Wang told Iran&#39;s Abbas Araghchi in Beijing. &quot;China considers that a complete cessation of fighting must be achieved without delay, that it is even more unacceptable to restart hostilities, and that continuing to negotiate remains essential,&quot; Wang said, according to a statement from his ministry after the talks. Manufacturing giant China has been comparatively sheltered from fuel shortages thanks to oil reserves and renewable energy, but costs of oil-derived materials like plastic and fabric have risen significantly. Trump cited a desire to reach a peace deal with Iran. Washington demands tight controls on Tehran&#39;s nuclear programme, which Iran has refused to agree to and has led to talks crumbling. &quot;On the nuclear issue, China welcomes Iran&#39;s commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, while considering that Iran has the legitimate right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy,&quot; Wang said. The US leader is expected to meet Chinese President Xi in Beijing on a visit the White House said will take place May 14-15. Beijing has not confirmed those dates.
