Islamabad: Political analyst Professor Adil Najam from Boston has described the emerging ceasefire between the United States and Iran as &ldquo;clearly good news&rdquo; for the world, noting that the situation had been escalating in highly dangerous ways. Speaking on Pakistan&rsquo;s TV programme Newsroom, he emphasised Pakistan&rsquo;s pivotal role in facilitating dialogue, describing it as a structural positive change for the country&rsquo;s international image. He said the United States and Iran are motivated to negotiate partly due to economic and political pressures, including the impact on the global oil market, but cautioned that the situation remains highly fragile, particularly in its early stages. &ldquo;The next 48 to 72 hours are extremely important,&rdquo; he noted, adding that the success or failure of this initial period will likely determine whether the ceasefire can evolve into a sustainable long-term arrangement. &ldquo;If we can hold firm in those three to four days, then I think the longer term becomes much more reliable,&rdquo; he added, but stressed that deep mistrust remains a major challenge. &ldquo;I am still holding my breath because there&rsquo;s a very real chance of a slip between the cup and the lip,&rdquo; he said. Professor Najam emphasised that the current ceasefire should be viewed as a starting point, not a final solution.&nbsp; &ldquo;The moment we are in is extremely important. This moment should be both celebrated and ensured that it leads to some sort of ceasefire,&rdquo; he said, stressing the need for continued support from the international community. The analyst also pointed to broader regional dynamics, noting that the conflict cannot be viewed in isolation.&nbsp; &ldquo;This is not just about the US and Iran&hellip; it has already turned into a regional and possibly even global issue that cannot be solved unless a whole lot of dots are resolved,&rdquo; he said, referring to ongoing tensions involving Israel and the wider Middle East. He pointed out that the crisis reflects a structural shift in global geopolitics, adding alliances are being re-evaluated, and countries in the Middle East will need to recalibrate strategies and priorities.&nbsp; &ldquo;Even after we resolve this&hellip; we will come to a new place, and everyone will be scrambling to figure out what that new place is,&rdquo; Professor Najam added.

Providing details of the counter-operation, the minister said 133 Afghan Taliban fighters were killed, more than 200 were injured, 27 posts were destroyed, and nine posts were taken over by Pakistani forces. The Pakistan Air Force targeted Afghan Taliban defensive installations in Kandahar, Kabul, and Paktia, the minister said. He further stated that two Corps Headquarters, three Brigade Headquarters, two ammunition depots, one logistics base, three battalion headquarters, two sector headquarters and 80+ tanks, artillery, APCs were destroyed. Tarar said Pakistan&rsquo;s armed forces have once again demonstrated that any aggression or malicious intent against the country will be dealt with firmly. He said the Pakistani nation stands shoulder to shoulder with its armed forces and that the forces have made the nation proud. The minister also said Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif praised the timely and courageous response of the armed forces under the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. Reiterating Pakistan&rsquo;s position, Tarar said it is unacceptable for Afghan territory to be used for attacks against Pakistan. He added that terrorists trained on Afghan soil carry out attacks inside Pakistan. Pakistan has once again made it clear that any such actions or unprovoked aggression will be met with a strong response, the minister said.

She added that enhancing trade mechanisms could help improve the quality of bilateral trade. Widya Putri said that during her visit, discussions focused on enhancing the trade partnership by exploring the potential of the services sector from Pakistan to Indonesia, including healthcare professionals such as doctors and dentists, and creating opportunities for Pakistan to provide skilled services to Indonesia. She said one way to increase the quality of bilateral trade was to enhance existing arrangements.&nbsp; &ldquo;Indonesia and Pakistan currently have a preferential trade agreement, and there were talks about potentially upgrading it in the future. President Prabowo had mentioned the need for an upgrade, with a new target of completing a comprehensive economic partnership agreement in 2027. There is strong momentum despite global uncertainty,&rdquo; she added. Widya Putri said there is growing demand in Pakistan for spices, tea, and other products, and follow-up is necessary to ensure these transactions translate into long-term partnerships. She also highlighted the potential of the halal industry, noting that Indonesian products, including beauty products, food, and beverages, are already present in Pakistani supermarkets. ISLAMABAD: The Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik said Islamabad was ready and willing to play a constructive role in defusing tensions between Iran and the United States, stressing that Pakistan does not seek instability in the region and will make every possible effort to help lower tensions. In an exclusive interview with Pakistan TV, Dr. Musadik Malik said Pakistan enjoyed strong relations with both Iran and the United States and believed dialogue and diplomacy remained the only viable path to preventing further escalation in the region. He said, &quot;The growing instability is being fueled by Israel&rsquo;s continued actions across Palestine, Syria and Lebanon.&quot; &quot;This is a vulgar display of atrocities,&quot; he said. He said Israel committed the genocide in Gaza. Malik questioned Israel&rsquo;s right to occupy land, seize water resources and carry out repeated military aggression across the region. He warned that such actions carry serious repercussions. The minister emphasized that Pakistan wants peace and stability across the Middle East and South Asia, adding that unchecked unilateral actions weaken the global rule-based order and threaten international peace. He said no country had the right to kill civilians, including women and children, under any pretext. Turning to South Asia, Malik strongly criticized India&rsquo;s approach to the Indus Waters Treaty, calling any attempt to control or delay Pakistan&rsquo;s water supply illegal and irrational. He said the Indus river system was the backbone of Pakistan&rsquo;s economy and livelihoods, supporting nearly half of the population and a significant share of the country&rsquo;s GDP. Malik warned that any effort by India to disrupt water flows, particularly during critical agricultural seasons, would be viewed as an act of war and met with a commensurate response. He said India was attempting to manipulate water flows through a cascade of hydropower projects in violation of the treaty. He also questioned India&rsquo;s reluctance to approach international arbitration mechanisms, saying that refusal to engage neutral forums suggests the wrongdoing. Addressing regional security concerns, Malik said Pakistan would continue to combat terrorism and urged Afghanistan to prevent militant groups from using its soil to attack Pakistan. He noted that Pakistan has hosted millions of Afghan refugees for decades and expects Kabul to act as a responsible neighbour. Malik concluded by warning that weakening multilateralism and international treaties could push the world toward greater instability, calling for renewed commitment to diplomacy, dialogue and international law.
