LONDON: Google faces a fresh UK lawsuit accusing it of abusing its dominance in online display advertising, the claimants announced Thursday, in the latest antitrust action against the US tech giant.&nbsp;The claim filed on behalf of British advertisers is seeking up to &pound;3 billion ($4 billion) in compensation, according to an estimate from KP Law, the firm leading the action.&nbsp;The case argues that Google favoured its own display advertising services, such as banner ads shown on websites, while excluding its rivals.&nbsp;KP Law said Google&#39;s practices left &quot;advertisers paying more for less effective display advertising&quot;.&nbsp;A Google spokesperson called the allegations &quot;meritless&quot;.&nbsp;&quot;Advertisers have many choices, and they choose our ad tech tools because they&#39;re simple, effective and affordable,&quot; the spokesperson said.&nbsp;The case has been brought as a collective action, meaning all potentially affected clients are automatically included unless they choose to opt out.&nbsp;It covers all UK advertisers who have paid for Google&#39;s advertising services since October 1, 2015.&nbsp;The claim was yet to be formally served, according to Google.&nbsp;The company&#39;s advertising practices have been the subject of multiple investigations and legal proceedings in the UK, the European Union and the United States.&nbsp;A separate lawsuit filed in UK courts last year also accused Google of overcharging for online advertising.&nbsp;Other cases on similar grounds are ongoing, including a &pound;13.6 billion claim brought on behalf of online content publishers, which was cleared in 2024 to proceed to trial.&nbsp;Google is also facing efforts by the US government to break up its digital advertising business to curtail its dominance.&nbsp;Last year, the EU hit Google with a massive 2.95-billion-euro antitrust fine for favouring its own advertising services.&nbsp;Google has said it will appeal the fine.

GENEVA: The World Health Organization said Thursday that more hantavirus cases could emerge after the disease killed three passengers from a cruise ship, but it expected the outbreak to be limited if precautions were taken.&nbsp;Another sick passenger from the MV Hondius landed in Europe earlier in the day, as the vessel headed to the Spanish Canary Islands and health officials scrambled to map the outbreak of the potentially deadly human-to-human strain.&nbsp;The fate of the Hondius sparked international alarm after three people travelling on it died, though health officials have played down fears of a wider global outbreak from the rat-borne virus, which is less contagious than Covid-19.&nbsp;WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told journalists in Geneva that five confirmed and three suspected cases had been reported overall, including the three deaths.&nbsp;&quot;Given the incubation period of the Andes virus, which can be up to six weeks, it&#39;s possible that more cases may be reported,&quot; he said, referring to the rare strain detected aboard the Hondius, which can be transmitted between humans.&nbsp;The Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands later announced another patient had tested positive.&nbsp;But the WHO&#39;s emergency alert and response director Abdi Rahman Mahamud insisted: &quot;We believe this will be a limited outbreak if the public health measures are implemented and solidarity shown across all countries.&quot;&nbsp;People thought or known to have contracted the virus are being treated or isolating in Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and South Africa.&nbsp;Rare diseaseHantavirus is a rare respiratory disease that is usually spread from infected rodents and can cause respiratory and cardiac distress as well as haemorrhagic fevers. There are no vaccines and no known cure.&nbsp;A passenger is thought to have contracted the virus before boarding the ship in Argentina and eventually infected others on board as it sailed across the Atlantic.&nbsp;Three evacuees were whisked away from the ship on Wednesday when it anchored off Cape Verde and a fourth landed on Thursday in Amsterdam, said the vessel&#39;s operator, Netherlands-based Oceanwide Expeditions.&nbsp;&quot;No symptomatic individuals are present on board&quot; the ship at the moment, as it sails toward the Spanish island of Tenerife, it said in a statement.&nbsp;The ship is scheduled to arrive there on Sunday and those on board will be evacuated.&nbsp;Oceanwide Expeditions said there were 149 people on the ship, including 88 passengers.&nbsp;Officials in Argentina said they planned to test rodents in the coastal city of Ushuaia, from where the ship had set sail on April 1.&nbsp;First caseA Dutch man who had boarded in Ushuaia along with his wife died aboard the ship on April 11.&nbsp;The man&#39;s body was taken off the ship on April 24 in Saint Helena, an island in the south Atlantic where 29 other passengers disembarked, the ship&#39;s operator said.&nbsp;It said it was working to trace all passengers and crew who got on or off the ship since March 20.&nbsp;Tedros said the WHO had informed 12 countries that their nationals disembarked from the cruise ship on Saint Helena.&nbsp;The Saint Helena government said &quot;more than 95 percent&quot; of the population had no close contact with the ship&#39;s passengers or crew, or boarded the vessel, and are currently &quot;at an extremely low risk of infection&quot;.&nbsp;The deceased man&#39;s wife -- who left the ship to accompany his body to South Africa -- died there 15 days later after also falling ill, with hantavirus confirmed as the cause on May 4.&nbsp;The couple had visited Chile, Uruguay and Argentina before the cruise, Argentine officials said.&nbsp;Chile&#39;s health ministry said the two passengers who died were not infected in that country as they travelled there at &quot;a period that does not correspond to the incubation time&quot;.&nbsp;According to the WHO, the incubation period for hantavirus can be up to six weeks.&nbsp;The Dutch woman had flown on a commercial plane from the island of Saint Helena to Johannesburg while she was showing symptoms.&nbsp;Officials were trying to trace people on that flight, which South African-based carrier Airlink said was carrying 82 passengers and six crew.&nbsp;A German passenger died on May 2. Her body remains on the ship.

PESHAWAR: Authorities in Pakistan&rsquo;s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have issued a heatwave alert as temperatures in several districts are expected to climb as high as 47&deg;C over the coming days, raising concerns over heatstroke, dehydration and pressure on public health systems.&nbsp;The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an advisory covering multiple districts, including Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Peshawar and Mardan, warning residents to take precautionary measures as extreme heat intensifies.&nbsp;According to PDMA Spokesperson Anwar Shehzad, the prevailing weather conditions pose serious health risks, particularly for outdoor workers, children and the elderly.&nbsp;The warning follows a weather advisory issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, which said high atmospheric pressure is driving the temperature surge across much of the country.&nbsp;&ldquo;Met office informed that due to the presence of high pressure in the upper atmosphere, heatwave conditions are likely to develop over southern and central parts of the country from 07th to 11th May, while in upper parts from 08th to 10th May,&rdquo; the department said in its advisory issued earlier this week.&nbsp;Under the forecast, southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Karak, Bannu and Lakki Marwat, are expected to record daytime temperatures between 43&deg;C and 47&deg;C.&nbsp;In central parts of the province, including Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera and Kohat, temperatures are likely to range between 39&deg;C and 43&deg;C.&nbsp;The Meteorological Department said a shallow westerly weather system is expected to enter the country&rsquo;s upper regions on the evening of May 10 and persist through May 13, potentially bringing some relief and easing the intensity of the heatwave.&nbsp;Speaking to Pakistan TV Digital, Shehzad urged the public to adopt preventive measures, including limiting outdoor movement during peak heat hours and increasing water intake to avoid heat-related illness.&nbsp;Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors between 11am and 4pm unless absolutely necessary, as those hours are expected to see the most intense temperatures.&nbsp;The PDMA has also directed district administrations to establish heatstroke response centers and mobile cooling stations in crowded public spaces, including markets and major roads, to provide emergency support during the heatwave.&nbsp;Farmers, particularly during the ongoing wheat harvesting season, have been advised to schedule field work and livestock care during cooler parts of the day to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and animal losses.&nbsp;KP remains highly vulnerable to climate-linked weather extremes, with authorities increasingly facing a cycle of heatwaves, flash floods and glacial hazards across its varied terrain, stretching from mountainous north to arid southern plains.

NEW YORK: New York&rsquo;s governor on Thursday ordered federal immigration agents operating in her state to not wear masks, a move likely to be challenged by President Donald Trump&rsquo;s administration after courts overturned a similar effort in California. Since the beginning of Trump&rsquo;s controversial mass deportation campaign, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have typically covered their faces, officially to avoid being identified and potentially threatened outside of work. &ldquo;For ICE, wearing masks without good cause is nothing short of an intimidation tactic, a cowardly attempt to evade responsibility,&rdquo; New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a leading Democrat opponent of Trump and his immigration policies, said Thursday. Images of heavily armed, masked, plainclothes officers marauding around US cities including Minneapolis brutalizing citizens and non-citizens alike garnered international attention earlier this year, peaking when ICE officers shot dead two Americans in the Midwestern city. As well as the restriction on face coverings, Hochul announced that ICE agents would no longer be permitted to enter schools, libraries, community centers, polling sites, and other sensitive locations without a judicial warrant. She also forbade local police from cooperating with the agency in any operation conducted solely on immigration grounds. &ldquo;Our officers, paid for by local taxpayer dollars, were hired to protect their communities...they&rsquo;re not there to do the federal government&rsquo;s bidding,&rdquo; the governor added. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Sri Lanka on Thursday concluded a two-week joint counterterrorism exercise in northwestern Pakistan, aimed at strengthening operational coordination and refining combat tactics between the armed forces of the two countries, the military said.&nbsp;The exercise, titled Shake Hands-II, was held at Tarbela and brought together special operations forces from both countries for joint training in counterterrorism procedures, drills and operational techniques, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military&rsquo;s media wing.&nbsp;&ldquo;The exercise was aimed at refining the drills, procedures and techniques involved in counterterrorism operations,&rdquo; the ISPR said in a statement.&nbsp;The military said the exercise began on April 27 and concluded on Thursday after two weeks of intensive training designed to improve interoperability and enhance combat readiness.&nbsp;&ldquo;Combat teams from Special Services Group, Pakistan Army and Sri Lankan Special Forces participated in the exercise,&rdquo; the statement said.&nbsp;The ISPR said the drills also reflected the longstanding military-to-military relationship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, describing the exercise as part of broader defense cooperation between the two countries.&nbsp;The closing ceremony was attended by the General Officer Commanding of Pakistan Army&rsquo;s Special Services Group as chief guest, while Sri Lanka&rsquo;s Major General Ajith Abeyawardana also witnessed the concluding session.&nbsp;&ldquo;The troops displayed highest standards of professional excellence during the conduct,&rdquo; the ISPR said.

WASHINGTON:&nbsp;Lebanon and Israel will hold a new round of peace talks on May 14-15 in Washington, a US official said Thursday, despite a new Israeli strike in the heart of Beirut. The attack late Wednesday killed a senior commander of Hezbollah, with Israel saying it will keep targeting the Iranian-backed group despite a ceasefire in place in Lebanon. Next week&#39;s talks will be the third between Israel and Lebanon, which had not spoken directly for decades and have no diplomatic relations. &quot;There will be talks between Lebanon and Israel Thursday and Friday next week in Washington,&quot; a State Department official said on condition of anonymity. Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed more than 2,700 people since March 2, including dozens since a ceasefire was declared, according to Lebanese authorities. At the last talks on April 23, the two sides met in the White House with President Donald Trump, who announced a three-week extension of the ceasefire. He also said that he expected a historic meeting within the ceasefire period between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. But Aoun said Monday that the timing was not yet right for a meeting, saying that first the two countries must reach a security agreement. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, at a news conference on Tuesday, said that &quot;there&#39;s no problem between the Lebanese government and the Israeli government&quot; and that Hezbollah was the issue. &quot;By and large, I think a peace deal between Lebanon and Israel is eminently achievable and should be,&quot; Rubio said.
