ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported on X on Tuesday that a rare lenticular cloud formation was observed over Koh-e-Murdaar, the eastern range of Quetta city.

The cloud appeared in the early morning of Oct. 28, persisted for approximately 20 minutes, and dissipated just before sunrise.

Koh-e-Murdaar is an over 3,000-meter-high mountain peak located in the Sulaiman Mountain Range in eastern Pakistan, near the city of Quetta.

Lenticular clouds form when moist, stable air flows over a mountain or other geographical barrier.

According to the International Cloud Atlas of the World Meteorological Organization, lenticular clouds have the "shape of lenses or almonds, often very elongated and usually with well-defined outlines; they occasionally show irisations."

"Such clouds appear most often in cloud formations of orographic origin, but may also occur in regions without marked orography."
