The measures included clamping down further on the so-called &quot;shadow fleet&quot; of aging tankers that Moscow uses to skirt oil export restrictions and curbs on Russian cryptocurrency traders. But the EU stopped short of imposing a full maritime service ban for vessels carrying Russian crude, saying it hoped to get G7 partners to go ahead together on it at a later date. The bloc also announced it was stopping sales of certain machinery to the Central Asian nation Kyrgyzstan to prevent the products from going to Russia. That marks the first time the US has used a mechanism to halt entire categories of exports to a specific country to avoid sanctions dodging.

DOHA: A US naval blockade of Iranian ports is likely to squeeze Iran&#39;s oil output in the coming weeks but claims it will throw the Islamic republic into economic free fall remain premature, analysts say. After weeks of bombing and counter-strikes, focus has shifted to the standoff in the Strait of Hormuz, which ordinarily carries around a fifth of the world&#39;s oil and liquefied natural gas. In response to Iran&#39;s blockade of the strait since the start of the war, the US imposed a counter-blockade of the Islamic republic&#39;s ports, a push to force its leaders into a compromise in peace talks. That bid, however, looks set to fail, at least in the short term. &quot;If the blockade lasts for more than two or three months, it can cause more damage&quot; to Iran, economic analyst and professor at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran Saeed Laylaz told AFP. &quot;If Iran suffers any damage, the damage to the countries in the southern Persian Gulf will definitely be greater,&quot; he added. There&#39;s a limit on how long Iran can bide its time, however. PARIS: Sales of new cars jumped last month in the European Union as consumers turned to electric vehicles amid soaring petrol prices driven by the war in the Middle East, data showed Thursday. Overall sales rose 12.5% in March from the same month last year to 1.16 million vehicles, according to registration data from the European Automobile Manufacturers&#39; Association (ACEA). That jump helped the market achieve a 4% rise in the first quarter, following declines in January and February. Sales of fully electric vehicles soared by 49%, with plug-in hybrids also jumping 20%. Over the first quarter, hybrids were the top choice of European consumers, accounting for 37% of overall sales. Plug-in hybrids accounted for another 10% of market share. The market share of simple petrol motor vehicles slumped to 23% in the quarter, down from 28% a year earlier. Fully electric vehicles accounted for just over 19% of overall sales. The ACEA noted that electric vehicle sales performance varied widely by country, with Italy, France and Germany posting strong gains. Petrol prices spiked throughout Europe after the United States and Israel attacked Iran on Feb. 28, resulting in a near block on oil exports from the Gulf and leading Iran to retaliate by attacking energy facilities throughout the region. Meanwhile, sales in Belgium and the Netherlands fell. The Volkswagen Group maintained its top spot in the EU market in the first quarter, with its market share dipping to 26.4% despite sales edging higher. That was primarily due to Stellantis, whose Fiat, Citroen and Opel brands saw sales surge, boosting the group&#39;s market share. Another major European car manufacturer, Renault, saw sales slide in the first quarter due to transportation problems affecting its low-cost Dacia brand. The PM called for a gradual shift to electric vehicles (EVs), directing that &quot;in the future, only electric buses and motorcycles should be procured for official use.&quot; He also ordered that &quot;steps be accelerated for the establishment of EV charging stations.&quot; The prime minister instructed officials to advance plans to maintain strategic crude oil reserves, saying the initiative should continue in view of future energy needs. &quot;Local production of high-quality storage batteries should be encouraged,&quot; he added. According to the press statement, officials briefing the meeting said that the National Coordination and Management Council, formed in view of the regional situation, was monitoring developments in the energy sector daily. They added that Pakistan currently has &quot;adequate petroleum reserves&quot; and that the country&rsquo;s food security situation &quot;remains stable.&quot;
