PM Sharif lauds UK ties, invites King Charles to visit Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s enduring friendship with the United Kingdom on Thursday evening, praising King Charles III’s “exemplary life of public service” and extending a formal invitation for the monarch and Queen Camilla to visit Pakistan.

 

Speaking as the chief guest at a reception hosted by British High Commissioner Jane Marriott to mark the King’s 77th birthday, the prime minister highlighted the personal role of the Royal Family in nurturing the “multifaceted partnership” between Pakistan and the UK, recalling King Charles’s warm telephone call last year and his 2006 visit to Islamabad.

 

“I would like to reiterate my most cordial invitation to His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty the Queen to visit Pakistan at their earliest convenience,” PM Sharif said.

Sharif also acknowledged the “great value” of the nearly two million British citizens of Pakistani heritage, praising their contributions across public life in the UK.

 

He lauded past development cooperation, citing a successful education and health partnership with the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) during his tenure as Punjab chief minister.

 

PM Sharif also spoke about the threat of terrorism to global peace and stability. "With its valiant armed forces and resilient people, Pakistan stands united and determined to confront and defeat this scourge in all its forms and manifestations,” he said.


The British envoy, in her remarks, offered condolences for the recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan, reaffirming that “the UK condemns terrorism in all its forms and stands with the people of Pakistan.”

 

She also celebrated the “strong cultural and people-to-people ties” between the two nations, noting that the bilateral trading relationship had grown to £5.5 billion a year.

 

The event, attended by senior officials, diplomats, and cultural figures, concluded with renewed emphasis on partnership, climate cooperation, and the UK’s continued investment in Pakistan’s education and development sectors.
