Pakistan reaffirms commitment to SCO ahead of future leadership role

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar met Wednesday with Shanghai Cooperation Organization Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev to discuss strengthening cooperation among member states and preparations for upcoming meetings of the regional bloc, the Foreign Ministry said.

According to a statement on X, Dar and Yermekbayev held talks on the SCO's priorities and explored ways to expand collaboration in key sectors, including the economy, transport and regional connectivity.

The two officials also exchanged views on regional and international developments. Yermekbayev praised Pakistan's contributions to promoting regional peace, stability and cooperation, the statement said.

During the meeting, the SCO secretary-general outlined proposals aimed at improving the organization's effectiveness and efficiency. He also briefed Dar on preparations for the forthcoming SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Dar reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to advancing the SCO's objectives and said was ready to work closely with fellow member states as it prepares to assume the chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State in September 2026.

Pakistan is also scheduled to host the SCO Summit in 2027, a role Dar said reflects the country's commitment to strengthening regional cooperation through the organization.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a Eurasian political, economic and security grouping whose members cooperate on issues including regional security, trade, connectivity and economic development.
