ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s “national commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities (PWDs), ensuring their full participation in Pakistan’s national life,” according to a statement issued by the Press Information Department.
The statement quoted the president as saying the government was taking “steady steps” to expand accessibility, education, healthcare, mobility and employment opportunities for PWDs.
“Measures such as the special logo on the National Identity Card, the issuance of disability certificates, wider access to social protection schemes, and the strengthening of rehabilitation and community-based support show our resolve to build a society where everyone has the chance to contribute,” President Zardari said.
He stressed the importance of cultivating an inclusive environment supported by accessible infrastructure and responsive public services.
“It is essential for a fair society,” he said, urging efforts to “remove physical and social barriers, as well as unhelpful attitudes, that limit the ability of persons with disabilities to lead productive and independent lives.”
The president called on the nation to support PWDs and recognize their identity with respect.
“Their participation in education, entrepreneurship, public service, and national development is vital for Pakistan’s future,” he said.
Zardari urged Pakistanis to work collectively toward a society “where no one is left behind and where persons with disabilities are seen as contributors to our collective strength and resilience.”
“Inclusion should not remain an idea alone but must take shape in our daily actions and decisions,” he added.
