ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued an early warning on Thursday about a ‘shallow’ westerly wave which has entered the western and northern parts of the country and is likely to persist till Feb. 3.
Under this system, heavy snowfall is expected in Naran, Kaghan, Dir , Swat, Quetta, Chaman, Qila Abdullah, Saranan, Pir Alizai Forest, Gulistan, Pishin and is also possible in the upper areas including Kozhak Top, Sheila Bagh and Loi Band.
It has highlighted the possibility of avalanches and landslides in the hilly areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir during the period. Heavy snowfall may cause road closures/ blockages.
Flash floods in local streams could come about as a result of landslides/ avalanches and heavy downpour may cause urban flooding.
The NDMA has also warned of isolated hailstorms and thunderstorms leading to heavy lightning.
Furthermore, in many areas, communication roads closed due to the previous snowfall have not yet been restored, and operations are underway to restore them.
Moreover, tourists have been advised to remain cautious and to avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period.
