Hegseth credits Pakistan PM, field marshal for ‘true friendship’ with US

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Saturday that Washington and Islamabad are developing what he described as a “true friendship,” pointing to the roles of Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in facilitating peace negotiations.

Speaking at the 2026 Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Hegseth made the comments while answering a question about India’s long-range missile systems, which are capable of reaching parts of Europe and the United States.

He noted that although he referenced India in his answer, he could just as easily have highlighted Pakistan, particularly the contributions of its military and political leadership to ongoing peace negotiations.

Hegseth added that this was a “somewhat unexpected development” and emphasized what he called a growing friendship between the United States and Pakistan, describing it as significant.

He also pointed to the US president’s role in helping facilitate peace efforts between India and Pakistan, both of which he noted are nuclear-armed nations.

US warns capable of resuming war with Iran as deal remains elusive

The United States warned on Saturday it was "more than capable" of resuming war with Iran after President Donald Trump said any peace deal must adhere to his red lines, including Tehran never being able to develop nuclear weapons.

The White House had signaled Trump was close to a decision on an initial deal after weeks of mixed signals in tenuous negotiations, though Tehran denied there was a final agreement on ending the Middle East conflict that has jolted the global economy.

US sources had told AFP the deal was waiting on Trump's sign-off, but the president had made no decision after a two-hour meeting in the White House Situation Room on Friday in Washington.

Meanwhile, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, while attending a major Asia defense summit in Singapore, said on Saturday local time that Washington could restart the war if it wanted.

"Our ability to recommence if necessary is (that) we are more than capable, our stockpiles are more than suited for that, both there and around the globe because of how we balance exquisite and more plentiful munitions," he said.

IMF, World Bank, IEA chiefs warn of summer fuel scarcity if Hormuz strait remains closed

Published: May 29, 2026 | 22:35 GMT | by AFP

The heads of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and International Energy Agency warned on Friday of the risks to fuel security during peak demand summer months if oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz does not return to normal.

"Global oil inventories are being drawn down at a record pace in response to the major loss of supply through the Strait of Hormuz," the heads of the agencies said in a joint statement.

"If shipping flows do not return to normal, continued rapid depletion of global oil inventories ahead of peak summer oil demand in the Northern Hemisphere would present increasing risks for fuel security, market conditions, and broader economic resilience."

In Friday's joint statement, they again highlighted that the surge in energy and fertilizer prices due to the war was having a disproportionate effect on lower income countries.

"Higher fertilizer prices are of particular concern as many countries enter the planting season," they said.
