Japan, Canada, UK praise Pakistan’s peacemaker role

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday received separate telephone calls from the prime ministers of Japan, Sanae Takaichi, and Canada, Mark Carney, highlighting Islamabad’s peace efforts that culminated in a ceasefire between the US and Iran.

 

The Japanese premier appreciated Islamabad’s diplomatic role in facilitating the US-Iran ceasefire and talks, according to a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

 

She expressed Japan’s full support for the peace process and its importance for regional stability and global energy security.



While thanking the Japanese prime minister for her good wishes, Prime Minister Sharif said he was grateful to both the US and Iranian delegations for their extensive discussions in Islamabad and added that Pakistan would continue its efforts to ensure the ceasefire is maintained.

 

The prime minister expressed his desire to further strengthen Pakistan-Japan bilateral cooperation, a sentiment reciprocated by the Japanese prime minister.


Close coordination

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper on Monday appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting peace and stability in the region during a telephone call with Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, according to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office.



During the call, both sides exchanged views on the direct US-Iran negotiations at the Islamabad Talks, as well as on broader regional developments.

 

Secretary Cooper appreciated Islamabad’s “constructive role” in promoting peace and stability in the region. Foreign Minister Dar underscored the need for all parties to fully “respect and implement” the ceasefire.

 

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued commitment to advancing dialogue and diplomacy as the “only viable means” to address regional challenges and foster lasting peace.


Congratulates PM Sharif

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney congratulated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Pakistan’s peace efforts that culminated in the temporary ceasefire and led to the recently held talks between the United States and Iran, hosted by Pakistan, the PMO said.

 


Prime Minister Sharif highlighted that the US-Iran negotiations were an important step toward peace and assured that Islamabad would continue its efforts to urge both parties to maintain the ceasefire and make meaningful progress toward de-escalation and regional peace and stability.

 

The two leaders also exchanged views on Pakistan-Canada bilateral relations and expressed their desire to work together to enhance cooperation in agriculture, clean energy, mining and minerals, as well as increasing Canadian investment in Pakistan.

 

PM Sharif reiterated his invitation to the Canadian prime minister to undertake an official visit to Pakistan at his convenience.
