ISLAMABAD: According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza since October 2023.

The announcement came as Hamas said it accepted parts of a U.S. proposal by President Donald Trump to halt the fighting, free hostages and set Gaza on a path to new governance. Trump publicly urged Israel to “immediately stop the bombing” after Hamas’ response, but residents still reported airstrikes in Gaza City soon after.

UN rights chief Volker Türk called the Trump plan a “vital opportunity” to end the bloodshed “once and for all,” saying the moment should be used to flood Gaza with aid and secure the release of hostages and Palestinians held in Israeli detention. His office posted the message on X on Saturday

Israel still has not released all the activists it has detained from the Flotilla fleet, including Pakistani Senator Mushtaq Ahmed. The fleet set sail last month, ferrying politicians and activists including Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg towards Gaza, where the United Nations says famine is taking hold.

Israel has not released all the activists it detained from the Global Sumud Flotilla, including foreign lawmakers and well-known campaigners. Among those intercepted were Pakistani politician Mushtaq Ahmad Khan and Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.

Israel has begun deportations, but hundreds remained in custody or in processing as of Saturday, AP reported. Switzerland lodged a protest after its consular visit to detainees was cut short. The flotilla sailed from Spain last month carrying politicians and activists toward Gaza, where UN agencies say famine has taken hold.

A United Nations Commission of Inquiry reported on Sept. 16 that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, citing four of the five genocidal acts under the 1948 Genocide Convention and recommending Israel “immediately end the commission of genocide.” Israel rejects the accusation, saying it acts in self-defense.

Outside the region, in Europe tens of thousands marched in Barcelona, and more than 2 million people rallied across Italy in a nationwide strikes, according to AP. Denouncing Israel’s war and the flotilla interceptions, protests also flared in other European cities.
