AI and childhood: The greatest question parents cannot ignore

A child in Britain recently told his teacher, “I don’t need to think. AI already knows the answer.”


That sentence should worry us more than any examination result.


According to a 2025 global survey by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), more than two-thirds of teenagers have already used generative AI for schoolwork.


A survey by Common Sense Media found that over 70% of American teenagers have experimented with AI tools, many using them to complete assignments rather than simply learn.


Greatest danger

The technology has entered childhood faster than schools, parents, and governments were prepared for.


As an educationist, I do not fear artificial intelligence. I fear a childhood where intelligence is no longer exercised.


Every generation has believed that the next invention would make learning easier. The calculator, the internet, and smartphones—all changed education. 


Yet none entered a child’s mind as quietly as AI has. It does not merely provide information. It writes essays, solves equations, explains science, creates artwork, and even comforts lonely children through conversation.


That is both its greatest strength and its greatest danger.


I recently watched two students working on the same history assignment. One spent twenty minutes asking questions, comparing sources, and discussing ideas with classmates.


The other typed a single prompt into an AI chatbot and copied the response within seconds.


Both submitted neat assignments. Only one had actually learned history.


Independent thinking

Education has never been about producing perfect homework. It has always been about shaping imperfect minds into thoughtful ones.


Research supports this concern. Studies from the OECD have repeatedly shown that students develop stronger long-term understanding when they struggle with problems before finding solutions. Cognitive scientists call this “desirable difficulty.”


The effort itself builds memory, judgment, and creativity. Remove the effort, and learning becomes shallow.


AI can shorten the journey so much that children may never develop the skills needed for independent thinking.


This does not mean AI should be banned from schools.


In fact, refusing to teach AI would be as unreasonable as refusing to teach computer sciences 30 years ago.


Today’s children will enter workplaces where AI is as common as digital communications.


Doctors will use it to analyze scans. Engineers will use it to design buildings. Teachers will use it to personalize lessons. Students who never learn to work alongside AI may find themselves unprepared for the future.


The question, therefore, is not whether children should use AI. The real question is whether AI serves the child, or the child begins serving AI.


There is a difference. Children should first learn to solve a math problem before asking AI to check their method.


Digital convenience

They should first write an essay before requesting suggestions for improvement.


They should first read a novel before asking for its summary. AI should become the assistant, never the author of a child’s education.


Parents have a responsibility that no software can replace. Dinner-table conversations build language better than chatbots. Bedtime stories nurture imagination that no algorithm can manufacture. 


A family walk teaches observation in ways no screen can imitate.


Childhood has always been shaped by human relationships, not by digital convenience.


Outsourced to a machine

Schools also need courage. We should stop rewarding only polished answers and begin rewarding original thought. Oral presentations, debates, practical projects, experiments, and classroom discussions reveal what children truly understand.


These cannot be outsourced to a machine.


There is another lesson we must teach. AI is not always correct. It can invent facts, misunderstand context, and present errors with complete confidence. If children grow up believing every AI response is true, they may lose the habit of questioning.


A healthy education teaches skepticism as much as knowledge.


The greatest risk of AI is not that machines will become smarter than children.


Thinking without AI

It is that children may slowly stop believing they need to think for themselves.


Artificial intelligence is one of humanity’s greatest inventions. It can widen access to education, support struggling learners, and open doors that were once closed.


Used wisely, it can become an extraordinary teacher.


But no machine can replace curiosity. No algorithm can replace character. No chatbot can replace the quiet confidence that comes from solving a difficult problem with one’s own mind.


The future of education will not be decided by artificial intelligence.


It will be decided by whether we continue to raise children who know how to think without it.
