DHAKA: Bangladeshi&nbsp;Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman has formally requested the United States to grant Bangladesh a special waiver to import refined diesel and other petroleum products derived from Russian sources to ease energy challenges, state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) news agency reported on Wednesday. The request was made during a meeting with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright at the Department of Energy in Washington DC on Tuesday.&nbsp; During the talks, the foreign minister underscored Bangladesh&#39;s ongoing energy challenges stemming from global supply chain disruptions, particularly ahead of the critical planting season, and stressed the need to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply for farmers and safeguard food security. Direct waiverRahman explained that Bangladesh could not take advantage of the earlier limited world-wide waiver by US on Russian oil at sea since none of the tankers were bound for Bangladesh at that time. In addition to seeking a direct waiver, the two sides discussed the options to buy more refined oil out of Russian crude from third countries to meet immediate need. US Energy Secretary Wright acknowledged the energy challenges Bangladesh is facing and expressed his country&#39;s commitment to support Bangladesh during these difficult times to help ensure its energy security. &#39;Positively consider&#39; He said the US will &#39;positively consider&#39; the requests of Bangladesh and assured that he and his team would work closely with the relevant departments of the US government to this end. The two sides also discussed longer-term cooperation for sustainable energy solutions for Bangladesh and the prospects of increasing procurement of US energy products. Secretary Chris Wright was assisted by Chief of Staff to the Secretary Carl Cole, Senior Adviser to the Secretary Audrey Robertson, Senior Adviser to the Secretary Andrew Rapp, Director, Office of Asian Affairs Margaux Murali and Fellow, Office of Asian Affairs Hamna Khan. The government has already taken several measures to curb fuel consumption, including setting limits on fuel purchases, halting production at most fertilizer factories, and deploying police to patrol filling stations.

He sought the waiver during a courtesy meeting with the US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent T. Christensen, at the Planning Commission in Dhaka. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the minister said that the United States had recently granted India a one-month temporary waiver to import Russian fuel oil.&nbsp; Similar support from the US would greatly benefit Bangladesh&rsquo;s economy, he said, adding that the ambassador would convey the matter to Washington. The US imposes sanctions on countries buying Russian oil, citing the protection of its national interests. According to the minister, the meeting primarily focused on volatility in the international energy market, particularly oil and gas supply disruptions stemming from the escalating conflict in the Gulf region.&nbsp; The 33-km-wide Strait of Hormuz has reportedly seen vessel movement nearly halted after joint strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran and subsequent retaliatory measures by Tehran over the past 11 days. Bangladesh, a net energy-importing country, is heavily dependent on the strait for its fuel supply. In recent years, the country has imported around six million tons of fuel oil annually, much of which passes through the strategic route. A significant portion of Bangladesh&rsquo;s imported liquefied natural gas from Qatar and Oman also transits through the Strait of Hormuz, making the country particularly vulnerable to disruptions in the waterway. During the meeting, both sides also discussed ways to increase investment, trade, and economic cooperation between Dhaka and Washington. Issues related to strengthening the capacity of various government institutions were also raised.

DHAKA: A Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced Dhaka&#39;s fugitive former police chief and two senior colleagues to be hanged for crimes against humanity committed during the rule of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.&nbsp;All three, including the capital&#39;s former police chief, Habibur Rahman, were tried in absentia, and their whereabouts are not known.&nbsp;The verdict comes ahead of elections on February 12, the first in the South Asian country of 170 million people since <a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/bangladesh-prosecution-demands-death-penalty-for-expm-hasina" target="_blank" style="color:#0073e6;" rel="noopener noreferrer">Hasina&#39;s</a> overthrow in August 2024.&nbsp;Five other ex-police officers were sentenced to varying terms.&nbsp;The case concerned the killing of six protesters in Dhaka on August 5, 2024, the day Hasina fled to India as <a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/bangladesh-court-detains-army-officers-for-landmark-trial" target="_blank" style="color:#0073e6;" rel="noopener noreferrer">protesters</a> stormed her palace.&nbsp;Up to 1,400 people were killed between July and August 2024 when Hasina&#39;s government launched a brutal campaign to silence the protesters, according to the United Nations.&nbsp;&quot;The police forces opened fire with lethal weapons causing death to the aforesaid six persons,&quot; judge Golam Mortuza Mozumder read to the court in Dhaka.&nbsp;The court heard how Rahman sent messages to police units ordering the use of lethal force to crush the protests.&nbsp;Chief prosecutor Tajul Islam said he was satisfied with the verdict against the three men, although he wanted tougher sentences for the five others found guilty who were handed prison terms.&nbsp;&quot;The court said their crimes have been proved and they committed crimes against humanity,&quot; Islam told the reporters after the verdict.&nbsp;In November, the same court also sentenced Hasina who remains in hiding in India to death for crimes against humanity. She refused to attend the trial and denies the charges.&nbsp;In that case, former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also sentenced to death in absentia after being found guilty of crimes against humanity.&nbsp;Ex-police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who was in court and had pleaded guilty, was sentenced to five years&#39; imprisonment.

In a statement issued in Dhaka, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it summoned Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Soe Moe over a recent incident of firing from Myanmar toward Bangladesh near the Whykong Union of Teknaf. &ldquo;A 12-year-old Bangladeshi girl was severely injured during the cross-border firing,&rdquo; the ministry said. Bangladesh said the shooting constituted &ldquo;a blatant violation of international law and a hindrance to good neighbourly relationships,&rdquo; and conveyed its protest to the Myanmar envoy, according to the foreign press statement. The ministry said Bangladesh asked Myanmar &ldquo;to take full responsibility and requisite measures to stop such cross-border firings in the future.&rdquo; It also urged that &ldquo;whatever happens between the Myanmar authorities and the armed groups in Myanmar should not in any way affect the lives and livelihoods of the people in Bangladesh,&rdquo; according to the statement. The border areas of Teknaf have previously been affected by spillover violence linked to unrest inside Myanmar, raising concerns over civilian safety on the Bangladeshi side.
