V&Eacute;LIZY-VILLACOUBLAY: France&#39;s President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky Monday signed an accord for Kyiv to acquire up to 100 Rafale fighter jets and other hardware, a boost for Ukraine as it fights the Russian invasion.&nbsp;The letter of intent inked by the two leaders sets out possible future contracts for Ukraine to acquire 100 Rafale fighter jets &quot;with their associated weapons&quot;, the French presidency said.&nbsp;It also lays out deals for the new generation SAMP-T air defense systems which are under development, radar systems and drones.&nbsp;The accord signed at France&#39;s Villacoublay air base is not a purchase and sales contract and is projected to be realized &quot;over a timeframe of about 10 years&quot;, the presidency added.&nbsp;Zelensky, who has suffered setbacks over the last week due to a corruption scandal at home and Russian forces closing in on the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, wrote on X ahead of meeting Macron that the accord would be a &quot;historic deal&quot;.&nbsp;&quot;A great day,&quot; Macron wrote in a brief post on X in French and Ukrainian over a picture of the deal being signed.&nbsp;The aim is to &quot;enable it (Kyiv) to acquire the systems it needs to respond to Russian aggression&quot;, added a French presidential official, asking not to be named.&nbsp;The Ukrainian president had already signed a letter of intent last month to acquire 100 to 150 Swedish Gripen fighter jets.&nbsp;France has delivered Mirage fighter jets to Kyiv, but until now there had been no talk of Ukraine acquiring the Rafale, the crown jewel of French combat aviation.

KYIV: A Russian strike on a children&#39;s hospital in southern Ukraine wounded at least nine people, including four children, authorities said Wednesday, while President Volodymyr Zelensky called it a &quot;deliberate&quot; attack that shows Moscow does not want peace.&nbsp;The strike in Kherson blasted out windows and left bloodstains on the floor of treatment rooms, with debris strewn across stretchers and medical equipment, footage published by Ukrainian officials showed.&nbsp;Russia has hit several hospitals and medical facilities during its invasion, drawing accusations of war crimes, though Moscow says it only targets military sites.&nbsp;&quot;They could not have been unaware of where they were striking. This was a deliberate Russian attack specifically against children, against medical personnel, against basic guarantees of life in the community,&quot; Zelensky said.&nbsp;Ukraine&#39;s ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said nine people were wounded. The youngest was aged eight, Zelensky said.&nbsp;Around 100 people were inside the hospital at the time of the attack, Zelensky added.&nbsp;Russia was &quot;not only dragging out its terrorist war but also trying to do everything possible to ensure that no opportunity to end the war succeeds,&quot; he said.&nbsp;Moscow has not commented on the strike.

UNITED NATIONS: President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he believed Ukraine could win back all territory lost to Russia, a dramatic shift from the US leader&rsquo;s repeated calls for Kyiv to make concessions to end the war.&nbsp;Trump posted on social media soon after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly gathering of world leaders.&nbsp;&ldquo;I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,&quot; Trump wrote. &quot;With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option.&rdquo;&nbsp;The strengthened support from Trump, if it sticks, is a huge win for Zelenskyy, who has urged the American president to keep up the pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end his war. It was a departure from Trump&#39;s previous suggestions that Ukraine would never be able to reclaim all the territory that Russia has occupied since seizing the Crimean Peninsula in 2014.&nbsp;That had disheartened Zelenskyy, Europeans and Ukrainians and called into question the US commitment to UN principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russia said it shot down three dozen Ukrainian drones heading toward Moscow, while Ukraine said Russian missiles, drones and bombs killed at least two civilians.&nbsp;The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights also said this month that Ukrainian civilian casualties increased by 40% in the first eight months of this year compared with 2024, as Russia escalated its long-range missile and localized drone strikes.&nbsp;A UN Human Rights Office report released Tuesday described the dire situation of thousands of civilians detained by Russia in areas of Ukraine it has captured.&nbsp;&ldquo;Russian authorities have subjected Ukrainian civilian detainees in occupied territory to torture and ill-treatment, including sexual violence, in a widespread and systematic manner,&rdquo; the report said.
