DHAKA: Khalilur Rahman, foreign minister of Bangladesh, left Dhaka on Saturday for the United States to take part in a series of engagements aimed at boosting the country&rsquo;s campaign for the presidency of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) news agency reported. On his way to New York City, the minister will make a brief stopover in Turkiye, where he is scheduled to hold several meetings and engagements as part of Bangladesh&rsquo;s diplomatic outreach in support of its UNGA presidency bid, a foreign ministry official said to BSS.&nbsp; During the visit, Dr Rahman is expected to meet diplomats and other stakeholders to strengthen support for Bangladesh&rsquo;s candidature for the upcoming UNGA session.

DHAKA: Turkish Ambassador to Bangladesh Ramis Sen on Friday paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister&rsquo;s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and reiterated Turkiye&rsquo;s support for Bangladesh&rsquo;s candidature for the presidency of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for the 2026&ndash;2027 term. The meeting took place at the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office in the capital&rsquo;s Tejgaon area in the afternoon, according to Prime Minister&rsquo;s Deputy Press Secretary Zahidul Islam Rony. During the meeting, both sides explored ways to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. The adviser and the Turkish envoy exchanged views on expanding collaboration in key sectors including trade and investment, defense cooperation, education and cultural exchange, technology, and infrastructure development. They also discussed several regional and global issues, with particular focus on challenges faced by the Muslim world, humanitarian cooperation, and the importance of strengthening mutual support on international platforms. Both sides expressed optimism about further consolidating the historic friendship and cooperation between Bangladesh and Turkiye in the coming years. They reaffirmed their commitment to working together for the welfare of the people of both countries based on mutual respect, trust, and cooperation.

ISLAMABAD:&nbsp;The President of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, on Monday called attention to the ongoing human rights crisis in <a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/taliban-allow-husbands-to-beat-wives-without-breaking-bones-report" style="color:#0073e6;">Afghanistan</a>, describing the Taliban&rsquo;s policies toward women and girls as a &ldquo;gender apartheid system.&rdquo;&nbsp;Speaking at the opening of the 61st session of the Human Rights Council, Baerbock warned that decades of progress for Afghan women and girls are at risk, with restrictions barring them from work, education, and participation in public life.&nbsp;&ldquo;Women&rsquo;s rights are the benchmark for the state of a society,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;If women, meaning half of the world population, are not safe, no one will be safe.&rdquo; She criticized any appeasement of such violations and urged member states to uphold humanitarian principles while holding the Afghan authorities accountable. Baerbock said she remains troubled by ongoing debates within the UN and the broader international community over how to deliver humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan while women and girls are effectively excluded from public life. She questioned how aid mechanisms can function when half the population is barred from participating in society. She also criticized attempts to draw distinctions between different factions of the <a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/annual-report-details-killings-abuse-of-women-under-taliban-rule" style="color:#0073e6;">Taliban</a>. Some policymakers have suggested that leaders based in Kabul may be more moderate than those in Kandahar, but Baerbock warned against such reasoning.&nbsp; In discussions taking place in global capitals and within UN institutions, she said, the core principle of defending <a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/un-security-council-extends-afghanistan-sanctions-monitoring-mandate" style="color:#0073e6;">human rights</a>, particularly those of Afghan women, has too often been sidelined. &ldquo;Appeasement in the face of grave human rights violations will not yield results,&rdquo; she cautioned. Elected in June 2025 to preside over the 80th session of the General Assembly, Baerbock stressed that women&rsquo;s rights serve as a benchmark for the condition of societies worldwide. With women comprising half of the global population, she said, global security and stability cannot be achieved if four billion people are denied safety and equality. Beyond Afghanistan, Baerbock warned of a wider rollback of women&rsquo;s rights globally. Norms and protections once considered firmly established, she said, are increasingly being challenged or eroded. Calling for decisive international action, Baerbock urged governments to defend universal human rights standards. She has previously advocated for the European Union to impose sanctions on the Taliban, citing what she describes as systematic gender persecution in Afghanistan.

The statement recalled the aggression played by India in response to the incident despite Pakistan&rsquo;s call for restraint, dialogue and diplomacy, a stance echoed by the international community, resulting in the killing of innocent lives, including women and children, in Pakistan. Saleem described India&rsquo;s &ldquo;reckless brinkmanship and provocative posturing&rdquo; as exposing its &ldquo;hegemonic ambitions&rdquo;. The statement criticized the violation of the Indus Water Treaty by holding it in abeyance and weaponizing the water, which serves as a lifeline for 240 million people, branding India a &ldquo;blatant violator of international law&rdquo;, said the statement. The Iranian president further said that Tehran does not intend to build nuclear weapons. &#39;Will never seek to build a nuclear bomb&#39;&quot;I hereby declare once more before this assembly that Iran has never sought and will never seek to build a nuclear bomb. We do not seek nuclear weapons&rdquo; he said, adding that his country supports a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction. Pezeshkian accused the US and its allies of double standards, saying they expand nuclear arsenals while pressuring Iran. He condemned Britain, France and Germany for voting to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran, calling it done &ldquo;at the behest of the United States of America.&rdquo; &ldquo;In doing so, they set aside good faith,&rdquo; said Pezeshkian. &#39;Betrayal of peace&#39; Blaming Israel and the US for destabilizing the region and betraying diplomacy with military strikes on Iran, he called the assaults a &ldquo;grave betrayal of peace.&rdquo; Displaying images of those killed, Pezeshkian delivered his first UN address since the 12-day Israel-Iran war, which Tehran says claimed the lives of many senior military and political leaders. On Ukraine, he urged a negotiated end to the conflict, saying Iran &ldquo;hopes that the efforts to bring an end to the war in Ukraine may result in a just and lasting agreement between Russia and Ukraine and bring solace to the human suffering caused by this crisis.&rdquo; The Iranian leader also voiced solidarity with Qatar following recent strikes. &ldquo;Iran condemns the aggression of the Israeli regime against Qatar, and declares solidarity with the people of Qatar,&rdquo; he said.

UNITED NATIONS: Turning the page on decades of distance, Syria&rsquo;s president addressed the UN General Assembly, marking the first time any president from his country has done so in almost 60 years.&nbsp;Ahmad al-Sharaa said on Wednesday that Syria is returning to the international community after six decades of dictatorship that killed 1 million people and tortured hundreds of thousands.&nbsp;&ldquo;Syria is reclaiming its rightful place among the nations of the world,&rdquo; he told the assembly&rsquo;s annual gathering of world leaders.&nbsp;Al-Sharaa became the first Syrian head of state to speak at the United Nations since Noureddine Attasi gave a speech in 1967 shortly after the Arab-Israeli war, during which Damascus lost control of the Golan Heights that Israel later annexed in 1981.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Assad family dynasty&rsquo;s autocratic, repressive 50-year rule in Syria abruptly collapsed in December, when then-President Bashar Assad was ousted in a lightning insurgent offensive led by al-Sharaa. Assad&rsquo;s fall ended nearly 14 years of civil war.&nbsp;Al-Sharaa blasted Israel in his speech, saying that it did not stop its threats to his country since the fall of President Bashar Assad in December, adding that its policies &ldquo;contradict with the international community&rsquo;s support to Syria and its people&rdquo; and endanger the region.&nbsp;Negotiations have been underway for a security deal that al-Sharaa has said he hopes will bring about a withdrawal of Israeli forces and return to a 1974 disengagement agreement. While al-Sharaa said last week that a deal could be reached in a matter of days, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in remarks Sunday, appeared to downplay the odds of a breakthrough.
