Asked to comment on complaints from inside the company that not enough was being done to verify whether children under 13 were using the platform, the 41-year-old head of Meta, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp, said improvements had been made. But &quot;I always wish that we could have gotten there sooner,&quot; he added. Zuckerberg was the most hotly anticipated witness in the California trial, the first in a series of cases that could set legal precedent for thousands of lawsuits filed by American families against social media platforms. The trial marked the first time the multibillionaire addressed the safety of his world-dominating platforms directly before a jury and under oath. PARIS: French lawmakers have passed a bill that would ban social media use by under-15s, a move championed by President Emmanuel Macron to protect children from excessive screen time. The lower National Assembly adopted the text by a vote of 130 to 21 in a lengthy overnight session from Monday to Tuesday. It will now go to the Senate, France&rsquo;s upper house, ahead of becoming law. Macron hailed the vote as a &ldquo;major step&rdquo; to protect French children and teenagers in a post on X. The legislation, which also provides for a ban on mobile phones in high schools, would make France the second country to take such a step, following&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pakistantv.com/article/meta-urges-australia-to-change-teen-social-media-ban" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);" rel="noopener noreferrer">Australia&rsquo;s ban for under-16s</a>&nbsp;in December. The draft bill excludes online encyclopedias and educational platforms. An effective age verification system would have to be put in place for the ban to become a reality. Work on such a system is underway at the European level. The hard-left France Unbowed (LFI) party&rsquo;s Arnaud Saint-Martin criticized the ban as &ldquo;a form of digital paternalism&rdquo; and an &ldquo;overly simplistic&rdquo; response to the negative impacts of technology. On Monday, nine child protection associations urged lawmakers to &ldquo;hold platforms accountable,&rdquo; not &ldquo;ban&rdquo; children from social media. Macron has also backed a ban on pupils having mobile phones in high schools. In 2018, France banned children from using mobile phones in colleges, where they attended between the ages of 11 and 15. Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said Sunday the government was looking at how Australia and other countries dealt with imposing online age restrictions. &ldquo;We hope that by next year, social media platforms will comply with the government&#39;s decision to bar those under 16 from opening social media accounts,&rdquo; Fahmi said in a video posted online by Malaysian daily The Star. &ldquo;So I believe ... if the government, government agencies and parents each play their respective roles, we can ensure that the internet in Malaysia is not just fast ...but most importantly, safe, especially for children and families,&rdquo; he added. Rising cybercrime&nbsp;Malaysia in recent years has tightened its oversight of social media services in an attempt to combat rising cybercrime. This includes requiring platforms and messaging services with more than eight million users in the country to obtain a license under new regulations that took effect in January. Several MPs in October backed the government&#39;s plan to ban under-16s, calling for proper mechanisms to verify the ages of users when they register for accounts. A survey by Ipsos Malaysia Education Monitor 2025 released by local media in September, revealed that 72% of respondents in Malaysia agreed that the use of social media should be restricted among children. From December 10, Australia will force social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, to remove users under the age of 16 or face hefty fines. &quot;Starting this week, many users will be asked to verify their age to continue accessing Snapchat,&quot; the company said. Users will be able to do so using an Australian bank account, government-issued identification, or by taking a photo of their face, which a third party will then use to provide an estimated age range. From December 10, users under 16 will have their accounts locked. Snapchat, like other social media platforms, has advised teen users to download their data as soon as possible, as it may be tricky to do so once the ban starts. The messaging app said it strongly disagreed with being included in the government&#39;s ban, but &quot;we will comply, as we do with all local laws in countries in which we operate.&quot; &quot;However, disconnecting teens from their friends and family doesn&#39;t make them safer &mdash; it may push them to less safe, less private messaging apps,&quot; it warned. So far, 10 platforms, including Discord, WhatsApp, Lego Play, and Pinterest, have avoided being included in the landmark legislation. But Australian authorities have reserved the right to update the list of banned platforms as required. Snapchat begins age checks in Australia ahead of social media ban

MELBOURNE: The Australian government has begun a public education campaign with tips on how to wean children off social media ahead of a world-first national 16-year age limit taking effect in December. Australian eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said Friday that information on her agency&#39;s website, esafety.gov.au, explained the new laws and how to navigate them. Starting December 10, platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X and YouTube could be fined up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million) if they don&rsquo;t take reasonable steps to prevent Australians younger than 16 from holding accounts. Messages raising awareness will also be shared starting Sunday across digital channels, television, radio and billboards. &lsquo;We want children to have childhoods&rsquo;&ldquo;We want children to have childhoods. We want parents to have peace of mind and we want young people &mdash; young Australians &mdash; to have three more years to learn who they are before platforms assume who they are,&rdquo; Communications Minister Anika Wells told reporters, referring to the current de facto 13-year age limit for social media accounts based on US privacy legislation. The Australian age restrictions have already proved polarizing, with some experts warning the changes will harm as well as protect children. More than 140 Australian and international academics signed an open letter to the government last year opposing a social media age limit as &ldquo;too blunt an instrument to address risks effectively.&rdquo; Despite that warning, the laws passed with resounding support last year.
