ISLAMABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a major political setback in Bihar when Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor won the Bankipur Assembly by-election, ending the party’s long dominance in one of its safest urban constituencies.

The Indian media reported on Tuesday that the victory marks Kishor’s first electoral success and is being viewed as a significant moment in Bihar politics, with implications that extend beyond a single by-election.

According to the Election Commission, Kishor secured 64,151 votes, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar, who polled 44,827 votes. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) finished a distant third with 14,273 votes.

The result overturned the BJP’s commanding victory in the 2025 Assembly election, when then-MLA Nitin Nabin had retained the seat with a margin of more than 50,000 votes before vacating it after his election to the Rajya Sabha.

Political observers say the BJP’s defeat stemmed from a combination of organizational and political factors. One of the biggest reasons was the absence of Nitin Nabin, whose personal popularity and long association with the constituency had been central to the BJP’s success for nearly two decades.

The by-poll tested the party’s organizational strength without its most recognizable local leader, and the result suggested that Nabin’s personal vote base was not easily transferable.

According to Indian media, the BJP also faced criticism for its decision to field a new candidate rather than rely on a leader with comparable local standing. Analysts noted that voter sentiment against the ruling establishment in Bihar, coupled with voter fatigue, created an opening for Kishor’s campaign.

Governance-focused campaign

Prashant Kishor effectively positioned himself as an alternative to both the BJP and the RJD, appealing to urban middle-class voters and first-time voters with a governance-focused campaign. His extensive grassroots outreach through the Jan Suraaj movement over the past two years helped build credibility beyond his reputation as an election strategist.

Another factor, the Indian media reported, was the fragmentation of traditional opposition politics. While the RJD remained in the contest, its weak performance allowed anti-BJP votes to consolidate behind Kishor.

Political analysts also pointed to a growing desire among sections of the electorate for a fresh political alternative, particularly among younger voters.

For the BJP, the loss is symbolically significant because Bankipur had long been regarded as one of its strongest bastions.

The outcome raises questions about the party’s dependence on established local leaders and its ability to retain traditional support bases in the absence of strong constituency-level faces.

For Kishor and Jan Suraaj, the victory provides momentum and validates the party’s grassroots strategy ahead of future electoral contests. The result is widely seen as more than just a by-poll upset; it signals a potential reshaping of Bihar’s political landscape.

Jan Suraaj Party, or "People's Good Governance Party," is based on social liberalism. It positions itself at the center to center-left of the political spectrum and seeks to function in the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership as a broad-based people’s movement.
