ISLAMABAD: Pakistan&rsquo;s hopes of staying alive in the ICC Women&rsquo;s World Cup face a stern test on Wednesday as they take on defending champions Australia at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.&nbsp;Pakistan have had a poor start to the tournament, suffering back-to-back defeats against Bangladesh and India. Another loss, this time against the world&rsquo;s top side, could all but end their chances of progressing, leaving captain Fatima Sana&rsquo;s team with little margin for error.&nbsp;The challenge could not be tougher. Pakistan have never beaten Australia in any format of women&rsquo;s international cricket.&nbsp;In 16 ODIs between the two sides, the closest Pakistan have come was a 37-run defeat and a four-wicket loss, both more than a decade ago. Their most recent series in 2023 ended in heavy defeats by eight wickets, 10 wickets and 101 runs.&nbsp;Australia, meanwhile, arrive in Colombo in near-invincible form. Since the last World Cup, they have won 27 of their 32 matches, with only four defeats. They began this campaign with a dominant victory over New Zealand before their second game against Sri Lanka was washed out.&nbsp;Pakistan&rsquo;s batting, already under scrutiny after failing to play out 50 overs in either of their first two matches, will need to show much greater discipline. Senior batter Sidra Amin, one of the few bright spots with a fighting half-century against India, admitted the team had been guilty of throwing away overs and allowing pressure to build.&nbsp;&ldquo;We are a good batting side, but we need to spend more time on the wicket and play the maximum overs,&rdquo; she said on Tuesday.&nbsp;Bowling has also lacked consistency. Extras, dropped catches, and erratic spells have cost Pakistan dearly, though Diana Baig&rsquo;s four-wicket haul against India offered some encouragement. Much will depend on spinner Nashra Sandhu, Pakistan&rsquo;s leading wicket-taker in recent years, to find her rhythm.&nbsp;For Australia, all eyes will be on Beth Mooney, who averages nearly 70 against Pakistan, and all-rounder Ellyse Perry, who praised Pakistan captain Fatima Sana as a &ldquo;talisman&rdquo; ahead of the clash.&nbsp;Pakistan will hope that familiarity with Colombo&rsquo;s tricky batting conditions can give them a slight edge. New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first, but their innings got off to a disastrous start. Suzie Bates was dismissed for a golden duck by Marizanne Kapp on the very first ball of the match. Georgia Plimmer (31) and Meli Kerr (23) managed to steady the ship, adding 44 runs for the second wicket before Kerr fell. Plimmer then combined with Sophie Devine for a 57-run partnership. Devine, who had scored a century in New Zealand&rsquo;s opening match, scored 85 runs off 68 balls, including a half-century. She and Brooke Halliday (45) forged the best partnership of the innings, adding 86 runs together. However, the introduction of Nonkululeko Mlaba turned the tide. GUWAHATI: Deepti Sharma&#39;s all-round display helped India beat Sri Lanka by 59 runs (DLS) in the opening game of the Women&rsquo;s Cricket World Cup on Tuesday. Sharma scored 53 off 53 balls and then took 3-54 in 10 overs to help her team overcome a batting collapse. Amanjot Kaur scored 57 off 56 balls and took 1-37 in six overs. Sharma and Kaur put on 103 off 99 balls for the seventh wicket and rescued India from a precarious 124-6 in 27 overs. India finished with 269-8 from 47 overs after two rain stoppages had cut down the game by three overs in each innings. In reply, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 211 runs in 45.4 overs. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu top-scored with 43 off 47 balls, but her side lost quick wickets in the middle overs. But it got a 52-run partnership between Athapaththu and Hashitha Madavi (29) for the second wicket. The match hung in balance when Sharma bowled the Lankan skipper in the 15th over. It was the turning point and Indian turned over the screws thereafter. Skipper Harmanpreet deployed her spin attack and together they picked seven wickets for 133 runs in 28 overs. Sharma picked up another two wickets, while Sneh Rana bowled the dangerous Nilakshi de Silva for 35. It was the second time Sharma scored a half-century and picked three wickets for India in ODIs and she was named player of the match. &ldquo;My partnership (with Kaur) was the turning point after we had lost back-to-back wickets. We wanted to take the game deep and I am used to such situations. So there was no pressure. First match (of the tournament) sets the tone and we want to keep winning,&rdquo; she said.
