ISLAMABAD: A United Nations report has revealed that 63 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, India, and several European nations, were complicit in what it describes as Israel&rsquo;s two-year genocide in the Gaza Strip.&nbsp;The report, titled &ldquo;Gaza Genocide: A Collective Crime&rdquo; and authored by UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, said the genocide in Gaza was &ldquo;not committed in isolation but as part of a system of global complicity.&rdquo; &ldquo;Powerful third states, perpetuating colonial and racial-capitalist practices that should have long been consigned to history, have allowed violent practices to become an everyday reality,&rdquo; the report stated. The United Kingdom, though not directly selling weapons, allowed a US supply line to pass through its bases in Cyprus and conducted 600 surveillance flights over Gaza in the past two years. The report said Israel remains &ldquo;disproportionately dependent on weapons imports,&rdquo; with the share of military trade more than double the OECD average. Diplomatic aid political protectionThe UN expert said that &ldquo;influential third countries&rdquo; enabled Israel to continue its campaign in Gaza by vetoing resolutions at the UN Security Council and adopting Israeli narratives portraying Palestinians as &ldquo;human shields&rdquo; or &ldquo;barbarians.&rdquo; While Arab and Muslim countries showed solidarity and provided aid, the report said their actions &ldquo;have not been decisive&rdquo; in stopping the ongoing assault or holding Israel accountable. It also criticized Western countries for what it called &ldquo;selective humanitarianism,&rdquo; noting that some nations condemned Israel&rsquo;s operations in Rafah in early 2024 while simultaneously withdrawing funding from the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Economic and trade tiesDespite mounting civilian casualties, the report said most Western states continued or even expanded trade with Israel. Germany&rsquo;s trade with Israel grew by $836 million, Poland&rsquo;s by $237 million, Greece&rsquo;s by $186 million, and Italy&rsquo;s by $117 million during the two-year period. It urged countries to suspend all trade in dual-use goods, as the European Union did with Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, and noted that only Colombia had taken decisive action by banning coal exports to Israel in 2024. RecommendationsIn its recommendations, the report urged the international community to:<ul><li style="line-height: 2; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Exert pressure for a complete and permanent ceasefire;</li><li style="line-height: 2; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">End the blockade and ensure free humanitarian access to Gaza;</li><li style="line-height: 2; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Support the reopening of Gaza&rsquo;s airport and port;</li><li style="line-height: 2; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Suspend all military, trade, and diplomatic relations with Israel;</li><li style="line-height: 2; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Prosecute officials and corporations involved in facilitating war crimes;</li><li style="line-height: 2; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Strengthen UNRWA and UN systems providing relief to Palestinians; and</li><li style="line-height: 2; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Consider suspending Israel&rsquo;s UN membership under Article 6 of the UN Charter for persistent violations.</li></ul>&ldquo;The horrors of the past two years are not an aberration, but the culmination of a long history of complicity,&rdquo; the report concluded. Pakistan has consistently called for an independent Palestinian state and urged the global community to act on the UN findings to ensure accountability and lasting peace in the Middle East.

For the past two weeks there has been a fragile truce between Hamas, an ally of Islamic Jihad, and Israel -- although the latter reserves the right to defend itself and its forces from militant attacks. &quot;A short while ago, the IDF (army) conducted a precise strike in the Nuseirat area in the central Gaza Strip targeting a terrorist from the Islamic Jihad terrorist organisation who planned to carry out an imminent terrorist attack against IDF troops,&quot; the military said. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to journalists as he left Israel, did not address the strike directly, but he noted that incidents are common in the immediate aftermath of ceasefires. &quot;Every night will bring new challenges on how to keep it together,&quot; he said. &quot;So we recognise that, but we also feel like we&#39;ve made tremendous progress in the last 12 or 13 days.&quot; Inside Gaza,&nbsp;the Al-Awda hospital confirmed it had received wounded for treatment after a strike in Nuseirat. &quot;The hospital has received four injured people following the Israeli occupation&#39;s targeting of a civilian car in the Al-Ahli Club area in Nuseirat Camp in central Gaza,&quot; the hospital said. The military said it would continue operations in Gaza &quot;to remove any immediate threat&quot; to its troops.

According to the military statement cited by Reuters, &ldquo;militants opening fire on Israeli troops is a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement.&rdquo; The strikes were carried out to neutralize the threat posed by those militants. Meanwhile, AFP reported that&nbsp;Hamas&#39; armed wing stated on Sunday that the group is fully committed to the ceasefire agreement with Israel and denies any knowledge of clashes in Rafah, where Israeli air strikes occurred.&nbsp; The Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades said in a statement, &quot;We reaffirm our full commitment to implementing all agreements, primarily the ceasefire throughout the Gaza Strip.&nbsp;We have no information about any incidents or clashes in Rafah, as these areas are controlled by the occupation, and our contact with remaining groups there has been lost since the war resumed in March this year.&quot;

CAIRO/JERUSALEM: Hamas fighters tightened their grip in Gaza on Tuesday after carrying out public executions, defying Israel&#39;s assertion that war cannot end under US President Donald Trump&#39;s plan until the militants are disarmed. In a stark assertion of the group&#39;s return, fighters executed men they accused of collaborating with Israeli forces. In one video circulated late on Monday, Hamas fighters dragged seven men into a circle of people in Gaza City, forced them to their knees and shot them from behind. A Hamas source confirmed the authenticity of the video. Gaza residents said fighters were increasingly visible on Tuesday, deploying along routes needed for aid deliveries. Palestinian security sources say dozens of people have been killed in clashes between Hamas fighters and rivals in recent days. Although Israeli troops have withdrawn from urban areas in Gaza under the ceasefire that began last week, drone fire killed five people as they went to check on houses in a suburb east of Gaza City and an air strike killed one person and injured another near Khan Younis, Gaza health authorities said. Hamas accused Israel of violating the ceasefire. The Israeli military said it had fired on people who crossed truce lines and approached its forces after ignoring calls to turn back. Trump proclaims historic dawn but hurdles remain&nbsp; Hamas&#39; resumption of power in Gaza and continued flashes of violence underscore the daunting hurdles facing efforts to move Trump&#39;s ceasefire plan towards a longer-term resolution of the conflict. While Trump proclaimed the &quot;historic dawn of a new Middle East&quot; to Israel&#39;s parliament on Monday, some of the most difficult elements of his plan have yet to be negotiated to resolve issues that wrecked previous efforts to end the war. Israeli forces remain entrenched across much of Gaza after their partial pullback inside the tiny, crowded territory. Hamas asserts control Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently maintained that the war cannot end until Hamas gives up its weapons and ceases to control Gaza, a demand that the fighters have rejected, torpedoing all previous peace efforts. When Hamas fighters appeared in the streets during the last ceasefire in January-March, Israel abandoned the truce and called off negotiations on an end to the war. But Trump, having announced that the war is now over, said on Monday Hamas still had a temporary green light to keep order. &quot;They do want to stop the problems, and they&#39;ve been open about it, and we gave them approval for a period of time,&quot; he said. Hamas sources told Reuters on Tuesday the group would tolerate no more violations of order in Gaza and would target collaborators, armed looters and drug dealers. The group, though greatly weakened after two years of pummelling Israeli bombardment and ground incursions, has been gradually reasserting itself with remaining fighters moving back onto the streets since the ceasefire took hold over the weekend. The group, which has governed Gaza since 2007, also deployed hundreds of workers to start rubble clearing key routes needed to access damaged or destroyed housing and to repair broken water pipes. Road clearance and security provision will also be needed for increased aid delivery. Hamas says hundreds of policemen were killed by Israel while protecting aid routes during the war. Israel said it was targeting Hamas fighters. Aid and hostages The ceasefire has stopped two years of devastating warfare in Gaza triggered by the October 7, 2023 attack in which Hamas-led gunmen killed around 1,200 people and seized 251 hostages according to Israeli tallies. Israel&#39;s military campaign in Gaza killed nearly 68,000 people according to local health authorities, with thousands more feared dead under the rubble. Gaza&#39;s Civil Defence Service said 250 bodies had been recovered since the truce began. Swathes of Gaza are in ruins and the global hunger monitor said in August there was famine in the territory. Reuters video on Tuesday showed people clearing debris from streets and an aid truck moving through a market protected by armed men sitting on top. UNICEF spokeswoman Tess Ingram said that while aid was getting into Gaza with tents, tarpaulin sheets, winter clothes, family hygiene kits and other critical items, she hoped for a significant increase later this week. In Israel, after Monday&#39;s jubilation at the return of the last 20 living hostages, families of those declared dead awaited word from Israeli authorities on the fate of their loved ones. The Israeli military said on Tuesday that the bodies of four hostages handed over by Hamas the previous day had been identified. One of them was a Nepalese student, the military said. This leaves 23 hostages in Gaza formally declared dead, plus one whose fate is undetermined. Some families fear their loved ones&#39; remains will be lost forever in the rubble of Gaza. A special international task force is meant to help locate bodies which Hamas is not able to find.

GENEVA: European and Arab nations, Canada and the US appear willing to contribute to the estimated $70 billion needed to rebuild Gaza, a UN official said on Tuesday, adding that the two-year war there had produced rubble equal to 13 times the pyramids of Giza. Jaco Cilliers, an official at the United Nations Development Programme, said Israel&#39;s war against Hamas had generated at least 55 million tons of rubble and that it could take decades for Gaza to fully recover. &quot;We&#39;ve heard very positive news from a number of our partners, including European partners... Canada&quot; regarding their willingness to help, he told a press conference, adding that there were also discussions with the United States. Since a ceasefire deal came into effect in Gaza, large numbers of Palestinians have returned to the ruins of their homes in the coastal territory. Huge swathes of Gaza have been reduced to a wasteland by Israeli bombardment over two years that killed some 68,000 people, according to Gaza health authorities. A large part of the destruction is in Gaza City, scene of some of the fiercest fighting. About 83% of all building structures there have been damaged, according to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT). UNDP said it had already cleared some 81,000 tons of rubble from the Gaza Strip and was continuing to do so. Israel launched its offensive after Hamas-led militants attacked the country on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Hamas freed the last living Israeli hostages from Gaza on Monday under the ceasefire deal and Israel sent home busloads of Palestinian detainees, as US President Donald Trump declared the end of the two-year-long war.

The source&#39;s comments come days after an Israel-Hamas ceasefire came into effect, and as both sides discuss implementing US President Donald Trump&#39;s 20-point plan to end the war, which calls for Hamas&#39; disarmament and for the group not to be involved in running post-war Gaza. &quot;For Hamas, the governance of the Gaza Strip is a closed issue. Hamas will not participate at all in the transitional phase, which means it has relinquished control of the Strip, but it remains a fundamental part of the Palestinian fabric,&quot; the source told AFP, requesting anonymity to discuss sensitive matters. Unlike other more top-heavy militant organisations in the region, Hamas&#39; leadership has in the past been divided on key issues, including on the future administration of Gaza. But where there appears to be no division among top members is on the question of disarmament, which the group has long described as a red line. &quot;Hamas agrees to a long-term truce, and for its weapons not to be used at all during this period, except in the event of an Israeli attack on Gaza,&quot; the source said. Another Hamas official who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive topics had earlier told AFP that Hamas&#39; disarmament was &quot;out of the question&quot;. The first clause of Trump&#39;s 20-point plan calls for Gaza to become a &quot;deradicalized terror-free zone that does not pose a threat to its neighbors&quot;. The plan also states Hamas will not have a role in future governance of the Strip, and that its military infrastructure and weapons should be &quot;destroyed and not rebuilt&quot;. Under Trump&#39;s plan, a temporary technocratic and apolitical Palestinian committee would be charged with the day-to-day running of public services. The source close to the negotiators said they had asked for mediator Egypt to call a meeting before the end of next week to agree on the composition of this committee, adding that &quot;the names are almost ready&quot;. &quot;Hamas, along with the other factions, have submitted 40 names. There is absolutely no veto over them, and none of them belong to Hamas,&quot; he added.

Hamas to relinquish control of Gaza after war, says source close to negotiators

ISTANBUL: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday said his country&nbsp;would participate in a &quot;task force&quot; to oversee the implementation of a ceasefire deal reached between Israel and Hamas. &quot;We will hopefully join the task force that will monitor the implementation of the agreement on the ground,&quot; Erdogan said. Turkey, which has been closely involved in the negotiations, sent a team to the talks in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh. The agreement, which will be signed in Egypt on Thursday, involves freeing the remaining hostages and is seen as a major step towards ending the two-year war that has killed tens of thousands of people and unleashed a humanitarian catastrophe. &quot;It is of great importance to urgently deliver comprehensive humanitarian aid to Gaza, exchange hostages and prisoners, and for Israel to immediately cease its attacks,&quot; Erdogan said. He also promised Turkey would help reconstruction efforts in Gaza.

Erdogan says Turkey to join 'task force' to monitor Gaza deal

GAZA: A senior Hamas official on Sunday said the Palestinian militant group is eager to reach an agreement to end the war and implement a prisoner swap with Israel, as negotiators converge in Egypt for talks. Israeli and Hamas negotiators are set to iron out details during talks in Egypt in a bid to end nearly two years of war in Gaza, after Hamas approved a peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump. Hamas negotiators travelling from Doha are expected to arrive in Cairo on Sunday before heading to Sharm el-Sheikh to participate in indirect negotiations with the Israeli delegation, the official said on condition of anonymity, as he was not authorised to speak on the matter. &quot;Hamas is very keen to reach an agreement to end the war and immediately begin the prisoner exchange process in accordance with the field conditions,&quot; he said.&nbsp;&quot;The occupation must not obstruct the implementation of President Trump&#39;s plan. If the occupation has genuine intentions to reach an agreement, Hamas is ready.&quot; A Palestinian source close to Hamas told AFP that the two delegations would be in the same building but away from media coverage. &quot;The negotiations aim to discuss the timeline for preparing field conditions for the transfer of captives held in Gaza, as a prelude to launching the prisoner exchange process,&quot; he added. &quot;During communications with mediators, Hamas insisted that it is essential for Israel to halt military operations across all areas of the Gaza Strip, cease all air, reconnaissance, and drone activity, and withdraw from inside Gaza City,&quot; the source said. &quot;In parallel with the cessation of Israeli military activity, Hamas and the resistance factions will also halt their military operations and actions,&quot; he added. The talks are also expected to include discussions of maps to be provided by Israel showing withdrawal routes and timelines, which will coincide with the prisoner exchange process, the source said. The Hamas delegation will also present lists of Palestinian prisoners who must be released by Israel in return for the Israeli captives, he said. According to Trump&#39;s plan, Israel is expected to release 250 Palestinian prisoners with life sentences and more than 1,700 detainees from the Gaza Strip who were arrested after October 7, 2023.

Hamas keen to reach deal, begin prisoner exchange 'immediately': official

ISLAMABAD: The foreign ministers of Pakistan, Jordan, the UAE, Indonesia, T&uuml;rkiye, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt, in a joint statement on Sunday, welcomed the steps taken by Hamas in&nbsp;response to US President Donald Trump&rsquo;s plan to end the Gaza conflict. &ldquo;The foreign ministers ... welcomed President Trump&rsquo;s call on Israel to immediately stop the bombing and to begin implementation of the exchange agreement and expressed appreciation for his commitment to establishing peace in the region,&rdquo; according to the statement. Gaza administration and ceasefire talks The foreign ministers supported Hamas&rsquo;s announcement to hand over Gaza&rsquo;s administration to a transitional Palestinian Administrative Committee of independent technocrats. They called for swift negotiations to establish implementation mechanisms. They said that there is a need for &quot;immediate launch of negotiations to agree on mechanisms to implement the proposal, and address all of its aspects.&rdquo; Commitment to peace, security, and humanitarian aid According to the statement, &quot;The foreign ministers reiterated their joint commitment to support efforts toward the implementation of the proposal, to work for the immediate end of the war on Gaza, and achieve a comprehensive agreement that ensures unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, no displacement of the Palestinian people, and that no measures are taken that threaten the security and safety of civilians, the release of hostages, the return of the Palestinian Authority to Gaza, unifying Gaza and the West Bank, and reaching a security mechanism that guarantees the security of all sides, in a manner that leads to the full Israeli withdrawal, and to the rebuilding of Gaza, and that creates a path for a just peace on the basis of the two-state solution.&quot; They described the developments as a &ldquo;real opportunity to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable ceasefire, and to address the critical humanitarian conditions facing people in Gaza Strip.&rdquo;
