ISLAMABAD: China is fast advancing its ambitious program to become the world&#39;s first major economy to commercialize 6G technology, widening its lead in next-generation telecommunications as the United States and parts of Europe continue to focus on expanding existing 5G networks. In a breakthrough, a Chinese aerospace company, Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co, recently announced the successful transmission of 6G satellite data to Earth at a speed of 100 gigabytes per second, using laser communication technology.&nbsp; According to the company, the speed is fast enough to download around 10 full-length movies in just one second. Experts believe 6G could deliver speeds and reliability between 10 and 100 times greater than 5G while enabling transformative technologies such as holographic communications, digital twins, autonomous systems and intelligent industrial networks. With extensive government support and the world&#39;s largest 5G ecosystem already in place, China appears well-positioned to shape the future global standards of 6G communications. What is 6G?6G, or sixth-generation wireless technology, is the successor to 5G and is expected to become commercially available around 2030.&nbsp; It is designed to deliver data speeds 10 to 100 times faster than 5G, with ultra-low latency, greater reliability and significantly improved network capacity.&nbsp; Unlike 5G, which mainly connects smartphones, devices, and industrial systems, 6G aims to seamlessly integrate artificial intelligence, satellite communications, sensing technologies, and cloud computing into a single network.&nbsp; This will enable advanced applications such as holographic communication, real-time digital twins, autonomous transportation, immersive extended reality (XR), smart factories, and globally connected intelligent systems across land, sea, air, and space.

PARIS: French authorities said Wednesday that they had imposed two fines on Shein totalling more than 22 million euros ($25.5 million), citing problems with product traceability, environmental labelling and delivery times. The new penalties bring the total fines imposed by France against the Asian fashion giant to more than 210 million euros. The latest fines were imposed by the government&#39;s consumer protection agency DGCCRF following a wide-ranging investigation targeting several e-commerce platforms, primarily based outside Europe, including Shein. The first fine of 5.77 million euros targets Infinite Style Ecommerce Co Ltd (ISEL), which handles sales for Shein. The DGCCRF accuses Shein of failing to comply with a 14-day period required for consumers to be able to reconsider certain purchases. The watchdog also accuses the company of omitting mandatory traceability information, such as the countries where its clothing is woven, dyed and manufactured, and of failing to disclose the presence of microplastics in its fabrics. Microplastics, primarily found in polyester, are released into the water with every machine wash, posing a serious environmental threat. In addition, the agency imposed a fine of 16.73 million euros on Shein&#39;s subsidiary ISSL (Infinite Styles Services Limited), accusing it of violations of consumer law. Shein has been under fire since it established operations in France. It is widely criticised by campaign groups and politicians for generating environmental pollution, practising unfair competition, selling goods that fail to comply with basic regulations and imposing poor working conditions in its Chinese factories.

KYIV: President Volodymyr Zelensky will be in Brussels on Thursday to convince European partners to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine, despite Washington pressuring EU countries against the plan, a Ukrainian official told AFP. The European Union has laid out a plan to use the frozen assets to harness 90 billion euros ($105 billion) for a loan to help Ukraine repel Moscow&#39;s forces, with the money to be paid back by any eventual Russian reparations to Ukraine. &quot;The US administration is pressuring European countries to abandon the idea of using Russian assets to support Ukraine,&quot; a senior Ukrainian official said Wednesday. The plan has the strong backing of many member states, including Germany, but has drawn opposition from others, including Belgium -- home to international deposit organisation Euroclear, which holds most of the assets -- whose leaders fear Russian reprisals. The Ukrainian official said that seven countries so far opposed the plan. PARIS: For US President Donald Trump, speaking after the release of an American security strategy that warned Europe was on the verge of &quot;civilisational erasure&quot;, the continent&#39;s immigration policy is a &quot;disaster&quot; that will result in many European countries no longer being &quot;viable&quot;. Speaking in a Politico interview published on Tuesday, Trump said Europe wants to be &quot;politically correct and they don&#39;t want to send them (migrants) back to where they came from&quot;, drawing a contrast with the hardline policy of his administration. Europe does keep welcoming workers, partly because ageing populations and falling birthrates are whittling away at its labour force. But Trump&#39;s broadside ignores a much more nuanced wider picture, with a tightening crackdown on illegal immigration in Europe leading to a decrease in asylum applications and irregular arrivals. The European Union&#39;s statistical agency Eurostat counted some 29 million third-country nationals as of January 1, 2024, representing 6.4 percent of the population. In 2021, this figure was 23.8 million. But countries issued eight percent fewer first residence permits last year than in 2023, according to Eurostat, suggesting a slight drop in legal arrivals. As of the beginning of November, the number of asylum applications in Germany had decreased by more than half compared to 2024. - Italy, Hungary and UK -Italy has already signed a controversial agreement with Albania to outsource the processing of asylum seekers intercepted at sea. Since her election in 2022, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, has made combating illegal immigration one of her priorities. Outside the European Union, in the United Kingdom, net immigration plummeted by nearly 69 percent year-on-year, the Office for National Statistics reported at the end of November. This data confirms a downward trend since the peak reached in 2023, largely due to the policies of the previous Conservative government, although there has been no let up in irregular Channel crossings.
