BHIT SHAH: As the Islamic month of Safar arrives each year, roads across Sindh converge on a single destination: Bhit Shah.

The town takes its name from the sand mounds where Sindh’s iconic 18th-century mystic poet, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, chose contemplative solitude over the noise of the world.

The 283rd annual Urs celebration, organized by the Culture, Tourism, Antiquities and Archives Department of the Government of Sindh, was spread over three days beginning on the 14th of Safar; up to half a million people flowed through the shrine's gates.

What defines the massive gathering at Bhit Shah is not merely its staggering numbers, but its radical, unyielding inclusivity. In a world frequently divided by strict doctrines and social boundaries, the shrine operates as a refuge of universal harmony where differences fade away.

Melody, memory, and mankind

The official proceedings commenced at the Dargah Sharif with the ceremonial Chador Sharif, where officials and devotees laid vibrant floral sheets over the saint’s tomb while offering prayers for regional peace.

The organizers also inaugurated a Thaqafati Goth, or Cultural Village, at Shah Jo Bagh to showcase local artisans, Ajrak block-printing, and traditional crafts alongside continuous Raag Rang musical recitations.

Nearby at H.T. Sorley Hall, local bards and folk storytellers gathered for the Sughar Kacheri to preserve oral literature and ancient regional riddles.

Each evening reached its crescendo at the Shah Abdul Latif Auditorium with Raag Rehan, where master musicians rendered verses from the Risalo late into the night.

As the final night of musical recitations wound down and pilgrims packed their belongings to begin the long journey home, the 283rd Urs proved that Bhittai’s message remains as vital today as it was three centuries ago.
