SYDNEY:&nbsp;One of Australia&#39;s most-decorated soldiers was charged Tuesday with murdering unarmed prisoners captured in Afghanistan, police said following a sweeping war crimes probe. A landmark military report in 2020 revealed grave allegations against Australian troops sent to fight Taliban forces, accusing elite units of torture, summary executions and &quot;body count&quot; competitions. Police levelled murder charges against former Special Air Service officer Ben Roberts-Smith, a distinguished soldier awarded Australia&#39;s highest military honor for his efforts fighting insurgents. Commissioner Krissy Barrett said the 47-year-old was allegedly complicit in a string of unlawful killings between 2009 and 2012. &quot;It will be alleged the victims were not taking part in hostilities at the time of their alleged murder in Afghanistan,&quot; she said. &quot;It will be alleged the victims were detained, unarmed, and were under the control of ADF members when they were killed,&quot; she added, referring to the Australian Defense Force. Court documents showed Roberts-Smith was charged with five counts of &quot;war crime - murder&quot;. They included one &quot;actual offence&quot;, one &quot;joint commission to an offence&quot;, and three counts of aiding or abetting a murder. Should Roberts-Smith be found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. The towering soldier became a household name across Australia when he was awarded the Victoria Cross in 2011, a medal reserved for only the most courageous wartime exploits. &#39;Unlawful killings&#39;&nbsp; He met Queen Elizabeth II, had his portrait hung at the Australian War Museum, and was even honored as the nation&#39;s &quot;father of the year&quot;. But the war hero&#39;s reputation was called into question in 2018, when a series of news reports linked him to the alleged murder of unarmed Afghan prisoners by Australian troops. The soldier had allegedly kicked an unarmed Afghan civilian off a cliff and ordered subordinates to shoot him, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald reported. He was also said to have taken part in the machine-gunning of a man with a prosthetic limb which he later used as a drinking vessel with other soldiers. Roberts-Smith has staunchly maintained his innocence throughout, launching legal action against the newspapers who aired the allegations. But his efforts to sue The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald for slander would backfire, with a judge finding in 2023 many of the journalists&#39; claims were &quot;substantially true&quot;. Such civil trials carry a lower burden of proof than the criminal proceedings Roberts-Smith now faces. Australia deployed 39,000 troops to Afghanistan over two decades as part of US- and NATO-led operations against the Taliban and other militant groups. As Australian veterans returned home, their actions have come into sharp legal focus. Under growing pressure, the government appointed a special investigator to probe whether current and former soldiers should face criminal charges. The 2020 military report found special forces personnel &quot;unlawfully killed&quot; 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners. But investigations into the alleged crimes have been complicated by the Taliban authorities&#39; return to power and the lack of willing witnesses, and Roberts-Smith is only the second soldier to be charged.

Pakistan rejects India’s ‘unwarranted’ statement on counter-terrorism actions

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday voted in favor of a United Nations Security Council resolution extending the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) by three months, reaffirming its support for the mission&rsquo;s role in promoting peace, security, and stability in Afghanistan.&nbsp;Speaking at the Security Council following the adoption of the resolution, Pakistan&rsquo;s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Usman Jadoon said Afghanistan continues to face multiple challenges, including an increasing threat of terrorism, human rights concerns, narcotics issues, and diminishing humanitarian assistance.&nbsp;&nbsp;He said Pakistan supports UNAMA&rsquo;s efforts in addressing these challenges and welcomed the unanimous adoption of the resolution.&nbsp;&nbsp;Jadoon also commended China for its role as penholder and for efforts to build consensus among Security Council members.&nbsp;He said Pakistan has consistently maintained that the deteriorating security situation and the rise in terrorism emanating from Afghanistan remain among the most serious challenges facing the country.&nbsp;&nbsp;He added that elements within the Taliban administration were collaborating with, or providing a permissive environment for, several militant groups, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP); the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade; Islamic State Khorasan (ISIL-K); Al-Qaeda; and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM).&nbsp;According to Jadoon, these groups operate with impunity inside Afghanistan and are responsible for cross-border attacks targeting Pakistani civilians, law enforcement personnel, critical infrastructure, and public places.&nbsp;He said the Security Council resolution expressed serious concern over the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan, which it said &ldquo;continue to constitute a threat to international peace and security,&rdquo; and called on the Taliban to take &ldquo;active, immediate, demonstrable and concrete measures&rdquo; to combat terrorism in all its forms.&nbsp;The resolution also outlined expectations for strengthening the safe and secure management of weapons and ammunition to prevent their diversion to terrorist groups.&nbsp;Jadoon said UNAMA, as mandated, has a responsibility to monitor and analyze security dynamics across Afghanistan, including gaining a better understanding of the illicit economy.&nbsp;&nbsp;He added that the mission is also expected to support efforts aimed at preventing the illicit trade and destabilizing accumulation of small arms and light weapons, as well as their diversion within Afghanistan and the wider region.&nbsp;He further said UNAMA should support efforts to create conditions conducive to the reintegration of refugee populations in Afghanistan.&nbsp;Jadoon also cautioned against what he described as disinformation advanced by local Taliban elements that could create obstacles to UNAMA personnel accessing different parts of the country. At the same time, he said Pakistan expects the mission to report objectively on developments on the ground while taking into account the security concerns of Afghanistan&rsquo;s neighboring countries.&nbsp;He expressed hope that the three-month extension would allow the Security Council to review UNAMA&rsquo;s role in Afghanistan in a manner that contributes to long-term peace and stability in the country and in the wider region.

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Monday he has designated Afghanistan as a &quot;State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention,&quot; demanding Taliban authorities release two Americans and commit to ending its &quot;hostage diplomacy.&quot; The move comes just over a week after Iran became the first country added to Washington&#39;s new &quot;wrongful detention&quot; blacklist. President Donald Trump, in September, signed an executive order that created the blacklist, similar to designations by the United States on terrorism. &quot;The Taliban continues to use terrorist tactics, kidnapping individuals for ransom or to seek policy concessions,&quot; Rubio said in a statement. He said it was &quot;not safe for Americans to travel to Afghanistan because the Taliban continues to unjustly detain our fellow Americans and other foreign nationals.&quot; &quot;The Taliban needs to release Dennis Coyle, Mahmoud Habibi, and all Americans unjustly detained in Afghanistan now and commit to cease the practice of hostage diplomacy forever,&quot; he added. Habibi, an Afghan-American businessman, previously served as Afghanistan&#39;s director of civil aviation. He was arrested in August 2022 in Kabul along with dozens of other employees of his telecommunications company, according to US authorities. The State Department has issued a reward of $5 million for information leading to Habibi&#39;s return. Coyle is an academic from Colorado who worked for two decades in Afghanistan before being detained in January 2025, according to the James Foley Foundation.

The Home Office said there had been a surge in asylum applications by students from those countries, and almost 135,000 asylum seekers in total had entered the UK using legal routes since 2021. &quot;Britain will always provide refuge to people fleeing war and persecution, but our visa system must not be abused,&quot; said Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood in a statement. &quot;That is why I am taking the unprecedented decision to refuse visas for those nationals seeking to exploit our generosity.&quot; The Home Office said the number of asylum applications by students from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan had &quot;rocketed&quot; by more than 470% between 2021 and 2025. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has ruled out any dialogue with the Afghan Taliban, saying there is &ldquo;nothing to talk about&rdquo; until terrorism originating from Afghan soil comes to an end, Prime Minister&rsquo;s Spokesperson for Foreign Media Mosharraf Zaidi said Friday.&nbsp;Speaking to Pakistan TV Digital, Zaidi rejected suggestions of renewed talks after Afghan Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid indicated openness to dialogue.&nbsp;&ldquo;There won&rsquo;t be any talks. There&rsquo;s no dialogue. There&rsquo;s no negotiation.
