ISLAMABAD: Dozens of social media accounts promoting the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operate from outside Pakistan and are believed to be part of a much larger network of hundreds of accounts. Using VPNs and recycled profiles, the group projects an image of a global movement larger than it actually is.
According to reports, the TTP has expanded its use of social media and encrypted apps in recent years to spread propaganda, recruit members and raise funds abroad. Its posts range far beyond Pakistan, touching on US foreign policy, the Uyghurs and Middle East conflicts, in an apparent bid to win international sympathy and donations.
But the polished online image masks a brutal reality at home. The TTP has attacked funerals and community gatherings, destroyed girls' schools, and extorted civilians. In one recent case in North Waziristan, six people were reportedly burned alive after refusing extortion demands.
