She also acknowledged Pakistan&#39;s right to self-defense under international law. Trade formed a substantial part of the discussions. Kallas said the EU is Pakistan&#39;s largest export market, ahead of China and the United States combined. She stated that Pakistan is also the world&#39;s top beneficiary of EU trade preferences under the GSP+ scheme. The EU foreign policy chief said continued access to the EU market is contingent on measurable progress on labor rights, human rights, environmental standards and governance. According to the joint communiqu&eacute;, Pakistan expressed interest in joining the EU&#39;s new GSP+ regulation, and both sides agreed to work toward meeting the relevant conditions. The communiqu&eacute; also cited the first EU-Pakistan Business Forum, held in Islamabad on April 28-29, as evidence of growing economic engagement. The forum launched the EU-Pakistan Business Network, and both sides agreed to convene it periodically. Kallas noted that Pakistan leads the EU&#39;s global Erasmus Mundus scholarship rankings for the fifth straight year. On migration, both sides agreed to continue implementing the Pakistan-EU Talent Partnership Roadmap and to coordinate efforts to combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking. The communiqu&eacute; committed both parties to the framework of the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. The communiqu&eacute; backed the UN Charter&#39;s core principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference and the non-use of force. It also welcomed UN Security Council resolution 2788, passed unanimously in July 2025 under Pakistan&#39;s presidency of the Council. Both sides also pledged to support the UN80 initiative to keep the organization effective and fiscally efficient. On Gaza, both sides called for full adherence to ceasefire commitments, unobstructed humanitarian access and a permanent end to hostilities. They expressed concern over conditions in the occupied West Bank, called for an end to illegal settlement activity, and backed a two-state solution consistent with international law. On Lebanon, both sides backed its sovereignty and stability and called for coordinated international efforts toward a lasting resolution. Pakistan briefed the EU on Jammu and Kashmir. The EU briefed Pakistan on Russia&#39;s war in Ukraine. The two sides backed peaceful resolution through dialogue, according to the communiqu&eacute;. They also discussed counterterrorism cooperation under the 2019 Strategic Engagement Plan. The communiqu&eacute; expressed serious concern over terrorist entities operating in Afghanistan and called on Afghan de facto authorities to take effective, verifiable action against all such groups. Both sides noted the deteriorating rights situation in Afghanistan, particularly restrictions on women&#39;s access to education and public life. The EU and Pakistan agreed to hold the 9th round of the Strategic Dialogue in Brussels.

EU foreign chief credits Pakistan with preventing full-scale Middle East war

ISLAMABAD: The International Cricket Council awarded Pakistan the hosting rights for the ICC Women&#39;s T20 World Cup 2028 qualification pathway on Monday, with matches involving India to be played at neutral venues. The ICC Board met on Sunday and approved a range of measures covering women&#39;s cricket scheduling, tournament formats, playing conditions and governance. Pakistan hosted the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, its first global ICC event in 29 years. The country previously held the ACC Asia Cup in full in 2008 and co-hosted the 2023 edition with Sri Lanka. The 2028 Women&#39;s T20 World Cup will have 12 teams. Ten spots are automatic: the top eight from the 2026 edition, the host nation if not already among them, and the next highest-ranked side on the ICC Women&#39;s T20I rankings as of July 6, 2026. The remaining two places will go through a 10-team Global Qualifier supported by regional rounds, with allocations to be confirmed at the ICC&#39;s July meetings. The board rescheduled the ICC Women&#39;s Champions Trophy 2027 to February 14&ndash;28, moving it from the June-July window. It also approved the ICC Women&#39;s Emerging Nations Trophy 2026 as a 10-team competition (five Full Members and five Associate Members) with qualification based on rankings and prior world cup results. On the men&#39;s side, the ICC Board approved in principle a Global Qualifier pathway for future Men&#39;s T20 World Cups and directed management to finalize a 16-team structure. Teams in the Challenge League retained eligibility for other List A matches within each cycle. The board approved a pink ball trial for Test matches, subject to consent from both teams, to allow play to continue in poor light. It also updated playing conditions to allow coaches or their designees to consult players at drinks intervals, mandated 15-minute intervals in T20 internationals, and required batters to be ready at the resumption of play. The legside wides trial was made permanent. All remaining MCC Laws changes take effect on October 1, 2026. The Board suspended Cricket Canada from ICC membership with immediate effect for breaching its membership obligations. Canadian national teams will remain eligible for ICC events during the suspension period.

ISLAMABAD: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday spoke with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar, appreciating Islamabad&rsquo;s constructive role in regional diplomacy while requesting it to continue using its &ldquo;good offices&rdquo; to help &ldquo;facilitate de-escalation&rdquo; in the current situation, the country&rsquo;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported. In an official statement, the Foreign Office stated that Iranian foreign minister &ldquo;expressed serious concern&rdquo; over &ldquo;recent developments in the region,&rdquo; including ceasefire violations in Lebanon by Israel and &ldquo;the orders by the Israeli government regarding potential attack in parts of Beirut.&rdquo; Araghchi appreciated Pakistan&rsquo;s &ldquo;constructive role&rdquo; in regional diplomacy. He also requested Pakistan to &ldquo;continue using its good offices&rdquo; to help &ldquo;facilitate de-escalation in the current situation&rdquo; and support &ldquo;efforts to maintain the ceasefire.&rdquo; Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar &ldquo;conveyed Pakistan&rsquo;s serious concern and emphasized the importance of ensuring that the ceasefire is sustained in order to prevent any breakdown of existing understandings,&rdquo; the Foreign Office stated. Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact.

Iran requests Pakistan to help facilitate de-escalation, maintain ceasefire in the region

Over the weekend, an Israeli strike on Deir Zahrani killed eight people, including three women, according to Lebanon&#39;s health ministry, while Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Monday said his country was facing &quot;a vicious and reprehensible Israeli aggression.&quot;&nbsp; This comes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to push deeper into the ground offensive in Lebanon despite growing international condemnation. The United Nations refugee agency UNHCR says Lebanon hosts the highest number of refugees per capita in the world, with roughly one in five people in the country a refugee. UNHCR data shows that the figure includes more than 1.4 million registered Syrians and approximately 200,000 Palestinian refugees. According to UNHCR, nearly 700,000 people were displaced within a week of intensified fighting, while Lebanese authorities estimate that approximately 14% of the country&#39;s territory is currently under evacuation threat. Syrian and Palestinian refugees, as well as undocumented migrants, reports The New Humanitarian,&nbsp;have in numerous cases been turned away from official shelters, with facilities prioritizing Lebanese nationals or registered refugee populations.&nbsp; The European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations says an estimated 160,000 migrant workers, from Ethiopia, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Kenya, and elsewhere, have been left with no choice but to sleep in public parks, on roadsides, or in informal tented settlements with no protection. The NRC warned in March that people were reliving &quot;the same cycle of bombing, loss and displacement&quot; experienced during previous rounds of conflict. UN agencies have appealed for additional international funding, saying the scale of displacement is overwhelming available resources.&nbsp;

LONDON: British ministers braced Monday for the release of potentially embarrassing documents relating to Prime Minister Keir Starmer&#39;s controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as envoy to the US. Hundreds of files expected to run to more than 1,000 pages were to be published on Monday as the scandal over Mandelson&#39;s links to US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein returns to plague Starmer and his embattled Labour administration. It will be the second tranche of documents to be published covering Mandelson&#39;s brief stint in Washington last year, which ended after the extent of his friendship with Epstein was revealed. &quot;The volume of information that&#39;s going to be put out is unprecedented,&quot; government minister James Murray told Sky News. The documents are expected to include messages between Mandelson and ministers and government advisers, including Starmer&#39;s former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney who resigned for advising the prime minister to make the appointment. The government has said it is withholding some documents on the advice of police, who are investigating Mandelson over alleged misconduct in office more than a decade ago. Mandelson is accused of leaking sensitive information to billionaire financier Epstein during his time as a government minister. He denies wrongdoing.
