In an exclusive interview with the Head of Pakistan TV Adil Shahzeb, Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said the Indus Waters issue must be addressed as a matter of national security alongside environmental and diplomatic concerns, with a coordinated and urgent response to safeguard Pakistan’s water future while continuing adaptation to climate change.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said Pakistan should treat the issue of the Indus Waters Treaty not merely as an environmental or diplomatic matter but as an existential challenge.

Speaking exclusively to Pakistan TV on the sidelines of the International Seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty in Islamabad, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said Pakistan must adopt climate adaptation and water security measures on a war footing.

He said the country should proceed with measures such as desalination, drip irrigation, canal lining and additional water storage, but cautioned that no new project should create the impression that Pakistan has accepted what India has announced regarding the Indus Waters Treaty.

Bilawal stressed that nations confronted with existential threats succeed when they remain united.

Referring to the recent Pakistan-India military conflict, the PPP chairman said the country demonstrated its strength by speaking with one voice, resulting in success not only on the military front but also diplomatically and on the narrative front.

He expressed hope that a similar national consensus would be sustained on the Indus Waters Treaty issue, saying Pakistan's response should be based on unity across political and regional divides.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also said Pakistan was facing challenges on multiple fronts, adding that India was pursuing policies aimed at destabilising Pakistan by supporting separatist and extremist elements.

The PPP chairperson said Pakistan had defeated India during the recent military confrontation and expressed confidence that the country would also overcome broader attempts to undermine its stability.
